Queen fans were stunned last year when fresh claims surfaced suggesting that Freddie Mercury, the band’s legendary frontman, had fathered a daughter. The Somebody to Love singer never publicly defined his sexuality, though his relationships with both men and women have long been documented. At the time of his death, he was in a relationship with Jim Hutton. More than three decades later, reports claimed Mercury died knowing he had a daughter, whose identity has remained private and is known publicly only by the initial B.
The claim was explored in the 2025 biography Love, Freddie by Lesley-Ann Jones. In the book, Jones alleged that Mercury’s child was conceived in 1976 during a brief affair with the wife of one of his close friends. The biography further claimed that the Queen star knew about B and sustained a deeply private but close relationship with her during the last 15 years of his life. According to the account, Mercury gave his daughter 17 of his personal notebooks before his death in 1991.

Discussing the highly personal notebooks, B previously told MailOnline through Jones: “His gift to me was our secret. Although those who lived with him and shared his life knew of the existence of the notebooks, none of them knew, after his death, what had become of them.
“His family, fellow band members, closest friends, associates and management have had no idea until now that he gave them to me as a present.”
She added that Freddie was an “intensely private” man, known for rarely giving interviews, adding: “Everyone else … they knew only what Freddie wanted them to know. Which wasn’t much.”
At the time of this bombshell revelation, B was married in Europe, a mother and working in the medical field.

Jones revealed that B first got in contact in 2021, and after developing a friendship, the author was granted permission to share the contents of the notebooks, in addition to recollections of B’s memories of Freddie.
In the book, his daughter penned a heartfelt note, stating: “Freddie Mercury was and is my father. We had a very close and loving relationship from the moment I was born and throughout the final 15 years of his life.
“He adored me and was devoted to me. The circumstances of my birth may seem, by most people’s standards, unusual and even outrageous.

“That should come as no surprise. It never detracted from his commitment to love and look after me. He cherished me like a treasured possession.”
While the bombshell left many fans divided, and the love of Freddie’s life, Mary Austin, was in complete disbelief and saying: “He never told me he had a daughter, and I can’t imagine him ever keeping that secret.”
Anita Dobson, the wife of his Queen bandmate, Brian May, also chimed in, shutting down the claims as a “load of rubbish,” telling the Telegraph: “I knew Freddie really, really well, I was a good friend of his, and I think Brian would trust me with that knowledge.”
Just months later, in January 2026, it was reported that B had died in hospital after a long battle with chordoma, a rare form of spinal cancer.
In a heartbreaking statement, her widower, Thomas, revealed the mother of two sons, aged nine and seven, passed away “peacefully after a long battle with chordoma.”
He added: “B is now with her beloved and loving father in the world of thoughts. Her ashes were scattered to the wind over the Alps.”
