The Narrow Road to the Deep North is based on the novel of the same name by Richard Flanagan.
The series tells the story of Dorrigo Evans across three periods in his life; before his deployment to the Second World War, during his time as a Far East prisoner of war and numerous decades post-war.
Each of the three periods unveils different parts of Dorrigo’s love affair with Amy, the wife of his uncle.
The five-part series charts the “cruelty of war, the tenuousness of life and the impossibility of love” through the eyes of an Australian doctor and prisoner of war.
The synopsis for the first episode reads: “While writing a speech for an upcoming book launch, renowned surgeon and celebrated war hero Dorrigo Evans is thrust back into memories of his time as a POW during World War II and of his brief, unforgettable love affair with Amy Mulvaney.”
Jacob Elordi and Odessa Young take centre stage in The Narrow Road to the Deep North, with the duo portraying Dorrigo Evans and Amy Mulvaney.
The series also stars Olivia DeJonge, Heather Mitchell, Thomas Weatherall and Ciarán Hinds, in addition to Show Kasamatsu, Taki Abe, Charles An and Akira Fujii.
Simon Baker, Masa Yamaguchi, Sean Murphy and George Simitzis also feature, along with Jack McGreal, Rupert Bevan, Essie Davis, Dan Wyllie and Ewen Leslie.
