Gethin Jones has announced that he has joined Team Wales as a “Chef de Mission” for the 2026 Commonwealth Games. The Morning Live star has been given a new appointment and is responsible for leading, supporting, and representing the national team at the major multi-sport event. The 47-year-old, who was born in Cardiff, shared the exciting news with his followers on Instagram with a number of images, some of which involve him interacting with Welsh athletes. Jones also worked as an attache for the Welsh team at the Gold Coast Games in 2018. The games are being held next year in Glasgow between July 23 and August 2nd, where 10 sports will be taking place.

The TV star said online, “I am beyond proud to share that I have been appointed ‘Chef de Mission’ for @team_wales for @glasgow_2026. Mae’n anrhydedd enfawr. And no… I won’t be the designated team cook!

“Chef de Mission is a French term meaning ‘Head of Mission’, and in a sporting context is responsible for leading, supporting and representing the national team at a major multi-sport event, such as the Commonwealth Games.

“Back in 2018, I had the privilege of travelling to the Gold Coast Games as Team Wales Attaché. It was one of the best experiences of my career, and I knew then that I wanted to be more involved.

“So I went back to University to study High Performance, Governance, Leadership and Culture. I’ve been lucky enough to gain experience with organisations like the NFL, WRU, the Rugby League World Cup, London 2012 and Rio 2016. All of this has led me to this role.” He signed off with, “I could not be more excited for what’s ahead. 400 diwrnod i fynd!”

Radio presenter Sara Cox left a comment saying, “If I was on a mission I can’t think of anyone else I’d want to head it up! You’re so perfect for this gig. Massive congrats & good luck to you & @team_wales for Glasgow 2026.”

Team GB swimmer and Welsh medallist Jazz Carlin said, “Amazing news!!!! Congratulations.” One fan typed, “Outstanding Geth! Not just being the perfect person for the role with your genuine love enthusiasm and generous nature but on the work you’ve put in to get there. That’s leadership. What a mission!!”

The 10-sport programme will include track cycling, weightlifting, swimming, judo, netball, artistic gymnastics, boxing, bowls, athletics, and basketball.
