Isaac Dixon is a former FEDRA soldier and the current leader of the Washington Liberation Front – a rebel militia that has taken control of the quarantine zone in Seattle, Washington.

Who Plays Isaac in ‘The Last of Us’ Season 2?

Jeffrey Wright played the role of Isaac in both the show and The Last of Us: Part II video game.

He’s been acting professionally in television and film since the early ‘90s and his work has spanned over a wide array of genres. Some of his major roles include Beetee in The Hunger Games franchise, Bernard Lowe in Westworld and Lt. James Gordon in The Batman. He’s also had roles in Angels in America, Casino Royale, Boardwalk Empire, BoJack Horseman and more.

“We were very excited when we were able to cast Jeffrey Wright, so it made complete sense to us to bring him back in the same exact role because, unlike some of the other casting choices in the game, he is the right age, he does have the right look,” Neil Druckmann, who is the cocreator of the show and the video game, explained in an HBO behind-the-scenes featurette. “It had to be this larger-than-life character. It felt like such a sweet opportunity that I, as a fan of the story, love, and I’m sure fans of the game will eat it up.”

Isaac was introduced in the fourth episode of The Last of Us season 2 as a FEDRA soldier who turns on his team. In his first scene, he sits in an armored truck as several other soldiers laugh about stopping residents of a quarantine zone from disseminating religious pamphlets.

When a young FEDRA soldier asks why the others are referring to the citizens by the slur “voters,” Isaac firmly reminds them: “Because we took away their rights. We took away their right to vote. Somebody started calling them voters to mock them.”

When their truck is suddenly stopped by a group of civilians believed to be members of the WLF, Isaac tells the others to stay in the vehicle and brings the younger soldier with him to speak to a woman named Hanrahan (Alanna Ubach). As he leaves, he tosses grenades into the truck then shuts the door.

This marks the beginning of his journey in the WLF.

Jeffrey Wright Reflects on Isaac’s Betrayal in ‘The Last of Us’ Season 2

“At the beginning of his story in the show, I wouldn’t say he betrayed FEDRA, I think rather it’s the opposite,” Jeffrey explained in an interview with HBO.

“He feels FEDRA has betrayed him in terms of ethics, commitment to citizenry,” he continued. “So he takes steps to reinvent himself, maybe at the expense of others.”

What Is the WLF?

The rebel faction was started by Emma and Jason Patterson as a direct response to FEDRA and the poor living conditions residents experienced in quarantine zones. However, the WLF eventually became a similar type of aggressive authority in Seattle, Washington, as FEDRA had been there.

As years passed, the WLF became fearful to outsiders – particularly toward the Seraphites, a cult-like community in the area. A war broke out between the two groups after their leader, known as The Prophet, had her soldiers attack WLF trucks while on a supply route run.

Isaac clearly loathed the way that FEDRA had been treating civilians, taking their rights and then treating them like prisoners – which makes his transition into the leader of the WLF and his tension with the Seraphites fascinating.

Similarly to how FEDRA called civilians “voters,” Isaac calls Seraphites by the derogatory name “scars” – a reference to the markings on their faces – and views them as little more than religious zealots. Years after joining the WLF, Isaac strips a Seraphite naked and tortures him for information on their next attack. The Seraphite claims the Wolves (a nickname for members of the WLF) kill Seraphite children, but Isaac contends that both sides have done horrible things in their war.

When the Seraphite offers him his hand to burn again, Isaac realizes that he won’t be able to get any further information from him and he shoots him.
