Billy Steinberg, the acclaimed lyricist renowned for crafting Madonna’s iconic anthem “Like A Virgin,” has passed away at the age of 75 following a battle with cancer. Steinberg, celebrated for his lyrical genius, not only made waves with the 1984 pop sensation but also left an indelible mark through his collaborations with musical giants like Celine Dion, Whitney Houston, and Demi Lovato. Among his many hits are timeless classics such as “Eternal Flame,” “True Colours,” and “Alone.”
The news of his passing was confirmed by his lawyer, Laurie Soriano. In a heartfelt statement, Steinberg’s family expressed, “Billy Steinberg’s life was a testament to the enduring power of a well-written song – and to the idea that honesty, when set to music, can outlive us all.”
His family further emphasized, “Yet those closest to him knew that what mattered most was not recognition, but connection – the magic of hearing a crowd sing back something that once lived only in his notebook.” Such words capture the essence of a man whose work transcended mere accolades to forge deep connections with audiences worldwide.
The statement paid tribute to Steinberg as a “visionary lyricist, devoted husband, loving father, and one of the most influential songwriters of his era.” His legacy endures through his wife Trina, his two sons, and two stepchildren, who survive him.
