Years after Selena Gomez encouraged fans to “Kill Em with Kindness,” Grimes put those words into action in a remarkable way.
The 37-year-old musician took to X to address negative remarks about Gomez’s latest music video, “In the Dark,” offering a compassionate response and calling the singer “one of the most beautiful girls.”
“I’ve been online for like 48 hours and despite minor benefits, I might need to step away. I watched this Selena Gomez video, and aside from a few odd moments that people managed to clip and misrepresent, she looks incredible,” Grimes, whose real name is Claire Boucher, wrote on Saturday, October 25.
The track is part of Nobody Wants This Season 2: The Soundtrack, with a music video directed by Luke Orlando. In the visuals, the 33-year-old Gomez dazzles in sleek, all-black outfits while singing about unconditional love.

“Imagine what it would feel like if people spoke about you in this manner. Try to envision the mental strength [Gomez] likely possesses,” continued the mother of three—who shares X Æ A-XII, 5, Exa, 3, and Techno Mechanicus, 3, with former partner Elon Musk. “How can we not morally hold accountable someone whose post goes viral at the expense of everyone’s mental well-being?”
Grimes highlighted the impact of cruel social media comments, adding, “How do u think little girls feel reading stuff like this about another woman?” She went on to detail how “this might be vaguely the second gen of women being allowed to be over 30 in entertainment.”
The songwriter slammed the “high school level bullying” done by keyboard warriors, demanding that those accounts should be “suspended for body-shaming en masse.”
“This is disturbing — in part because it’s not even true if u actually watch this video. I’m not rly in the biz of even knowing what celebrities do, i have no context here, but this place is unhealthy as f*** and this being socially acceptable behavior is culture death,” she continued.
The catchy song follows the release of Gomez’s collaborative album, I Said I Loved You First, which she worked on with now-husband Benny Blanco. (Gomez and Blanco, 37, tied the knot during a romantic ceremony on September 27, weeks after she celebrated her bachelorette party in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico).
Grimes, who is known to have her own unique sense of style, spoke out in defense of Gomez after debuting a new face tattoo — a ring near her left eye.
“Spent like 10 years emotionally working up to a face tattoo but I guess I drew on my face too much and literally no one noticed, not even my parents, not even after the video lol,” Grimes wrote.
“That said I think @glyphomancer is onto something truly novel and innovative with her work esp on face tats — there’s a true beauty, delicacy, and innovation here imo,” she continued. “Feel like tats are in a crazy renaissance period that’s sort of under appreciated [at the moment.]”
