It was a real delight to see Pat Sajak back on our television screens. It was in June 2023, when the beloved host shared with viewers and fans alike that he would be hosting one more final season before retiring after 41 seasons on the show.

“Well, the time has come. I’ve decided that our 41st season, which begins in September, will be my last,” he shared on X (formerly known as Twitter). “It’s been a wonderful ride, and I’ll have more to say in the coming months. Many thanks to you all. (If nothing else, it’ll keep the clickbait sites busy!)”

When it came time for Pat’s last and final episode, which aired on June 7th, 2024, the host gave a very touching speech:

“Well, the time has come to say goodbye. I have a few thanks and acknowledgments before I go. And I want to start with all of you watching out there. It’s been an incredible privilege to be invited into millions of homes night after night, year after year, decade after decade. And I’ve always felt that the privilege came with a responsibility to keep this daily half hour a safe place for family fun. No social issues, no politics, nothing embarrassing, I hope. Just a game,” he shared.

Pat became Wheel of Fortune’s host in 1981, after host Chuck Woolery decided to step down.

Pat’s decision to retire was straightforward — he simply felt the time was right. Speaking to his daughter, Maggie Sajak for the Thanks For the Memories miniseries, he shared, “My goal was not to do the job until I keel over on it. You’ve always heard me say this dozens of times, I’d rather leave a couple years too early than a couple of years too late.”

“Welcome to Wheel of Fortune. I am your host, Ryan Seacrest. I still can’t believe my luck being here with you tonight to continue this legacy of this incredible show with all of you, and of course, my good friend Vanna White,” Ryan began.

“Thank you for the very warm welcome. Hosting ‘Wheel of Fortune’ is a dream job.”

He continued, “I’ve been a fan of this show since I was a kid, watching it in Atlanta with my family, and I know how special it is that Wheel has been in your living rooms for the past 40 years. And I’m just so grateful to be invited in. I also know I’ve got some very big shoes to fill. So let’s play Wheel of Fortune.”

After Pat completes his hosting duties for the remainder of Celebrity Wheel of Fortune Season 5, Ryan will take over for the following season. ABC confirmed the renewal on May 9th.
