Dave Bautista is an A-list actor these days, but the road to getting there was not an easy one. Credit to Dave, who decided to be picky with his roles from the start, as he was advised from others to do so. The tactic worked out for Bautista, who got cast in a career-changing role with Guardians of the Galaxy.
Despite his success, directors still make a certain request for Bautista and his look. We’ll reveal what his directors are asking for, and why Bautista continues to refuse. His training coach Joe Bennett discussed Dave’s struggles in Hollywood, which includes his look and training style.
We’re also going to take a look how Dave trains these days, and how he has changed his goals these days.
Dave Bautista Did Things His Own Way When Starting Off In Hollywood, Despite The Temptations Of Certain Offers
Similar to Dwayne Johnson, Dave Bautista left the world of sports and entertainment at the very top. Entering the world of Hollywood, Bautista was given some wise advice from his peers. The best lesson Bautista learned was not to jump on whatever offer came his way. Dave decided to be picky, and it all worked for the better despite the struggle at the start.
“Before I left WWE, Stone Cold Steve Austin pulled me aside and said, ‘You’re going to get offers for horrible scripts. The money will be tempting. Don’t get caught in that trap,” Bautista tells GQ.
Although Bautista struggled early on and basically went broke, his fortune would all change once he got cast in Guardians of the Galaxy. Dave recalls the moment, shaking and crying after hearing the news.
“I had to pull over because I was crying so hard,” he says now. “I turned right back around and walked into my house shaking to tell my wife I had gotten the role, and we were both standing there freaking out.”
Bautista continues to do things his way, as he turned down massive franchises in the past, including Fast and Furious. Not only did he turn down major roles, but he also ignores certain suggestions given by Hollywood and those on film sets.
Dave Bautista’s Trainer Revealed Hollywood Is Constantly Asking For Dave Bautista To Get Smaller
Putting on size was a part of life for Dave Bautista even prior to his days as a sports entertainer. Working as a bouncer, Bautista’s life was all about working out, sleeping, working, and doing it all over again the next day.
“I bounced all night, I worked out, I went to sleep,” he says. “That’s what I did for ten-plus years.”

As far as his size is concerned, it seems as though Hollywood is still taking exception to it. According to his coach Joe Bennett, Dave is typically asked to get smaller, but doesn’t really seem to care about the suggestion.
Bennett revealed on YouTube, “Everybody in his last bunch of roles wants him smaller. All the directors, everyone, want him smaller. It all depends on the role.” When asked if Dave does get smaller, Bennett revealed, “No, he doesn’t care. He has a hard time getting smaller, he’s had muscle for so long. He hangs on to it pretty well.”
Bennett would go on to reveal Dave’s struggle of changing for certain roles, like putting on weight for Knock on the Cabin, while still shooting for Guardians of the Galaxy.
Dwayne Johnson faced a similar reality to Bautista, and decided to conform at the start. However, once DJ had enough and went back to his old ways, things started to change in his favor. Clearly, it is all about being comfortable with who you are, and not what someone else expects of you.
Dave Bautista Revealed He Doesn’t Train To Be A ‘Meathead’ Or To Get Bigger
Speaking alongside Men’s Health, Dave Bautista revealed that his goal these days have changed, and he isn’t focused on getting bigger.
He revealed, “I think a lot of people think I’m just a meathead and that I live my life lifting weights. And I actually don’t. I do live my life training, but I think people think that I train because I want to look like a bodybuilder or a big musclehead. And it’s not at all the case.”
Dave would go on to reveal that his look is due to his ability to build muscle easier than others.
“Me looking the way I do is really just kind of a by-product of that,” he said. “I’m not consumed about like, ‘Oh I can bench, like, 500 pounds; I can deadlift 800 pounds.’ I’m not that guy at all. I’d rather watch someone else deadlift than do it myself. I’d rather be boxing or doing some type of interesting cardio like cycling. I’d rather be working with a trainer and keeping it fresh.”
At the age of 54, Dave Bautista remains in top shape, and that likely won’t change.
