How Demi Became The True Villain Of The Secret Lives Of Mormon Wives Season 2

Anyone who’s tuned into Season 2 of The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives has surely found a surprise in all the twists. Hulu’s innovative reality TV show follows a group of social media influencers based in Provo, Utah who collectively refer to themselves as “MomTok” due to the fact that they’re a circle of friends who are also young Mormon mothers.

While Season 1 largely centered around cast member Taylor Frankie Paul, one of the founders of MomTok who was also responsible for copping to the group’s soft swinging and embroiling them in what eventually became a national news scandal, Season 2 sees a new person coming in as potentially the most controversial. Indeed, the latest season seems to show that Demi Engemann is the most problematic in the group, even turning the other cast members against her.

Demi Was Willing To Backstab Her Friends For Funds

In the first season of the show, Demi was often shown as one of the funnier, more happy-go-lucky members of the group. Unlike some of the other women who tended to be more conservative, adhering to their faith, Demi had no problem speaking out about her sex life and preferences, and she and her then-best friend Jessi often liked playing pranks on the others.

This season, however, we see a very different side of Demi. When the group played a game of answering anonymous questions mid-way through the season during a trip to Arizona, it came out that Demi had apparently pushed for Jessi to be cut from the show for Season 2 if it meant that she herself made more money from filming. This understandably came as a shock to the rest of the women, as Jessi had always been a staunch supporter of Demi, noting that she always had her friend’s back no matter what.

In the fallout since the discovery, some of the other cast members have expressed their disapproval of Demi’s actions. In her appearance on “The Viall Files” podcast, for instance, fellow castmate Layla shared her candid thoughts on the situation:

I think, personally, for me, the behaviors that I saw were just so alarming that I couldn’t just kind of turn a blind eye to it.

“I try to give a lot of people grace. That’s something that I’m very big on. I’m very big on forgiving and like giving people second chances, but for me, personally, seeing what she did to Jessi and just kind of honestly how evil it was, I was like, ‘What makes me think that she’s not going to go and try to do this to me?’” she added.

Demi Also Picked Fights With Taylor

Though Jessi claimed that she and Demi had put their drama behind them before Season 2, she wasn’t the only one experiencing issues with Demi. This season, Taylor and Demi also came to blows, seemingly over who was doing things for the sake of attention and who truly deserved to be at the center of the group.

When Taylor got upset with the group that she’d attended the CMAs and felt like none of the others publicly supported her over social media, Demi called her out for expecting too much from them and acting like she was better than the others. For her part, Taylor found this ironic, as she pointed out that Demi’s own behavior—and the fact that she’d previously said she believed she deserved bigger brand deals than the others—showed that she herself was the one with an ego problem.

Towards the end of the season, the two get into their biggest fight yet, even roping in Taylor’s mom, to whom Demi tells her that Taylor should stop stirring the pot and focus more on being a parent. It seems that Season 3 is shaping up to be a battle to definitively decide who will be the queen bee of MomTok. If Taylor or Demi could have their way, it would be ensuring that the other was cut from the group moving forward.

Layla was adamant that she’d be cautious of Demi’s actions going forward now that she’d seen her true colors:

I feel like at this point, if we were to just keep turning a blind eye, I feel like that would be kind of dumb of us almost. I feel like at some point you kind of need to wake up and see the warnings and kind of take a step back.

Though Season 3 of the show has yet to be officially picked up, we know that more episodes have already been filmed with the cast, and it’s possible we’ll get more episodes before the end of the year.
