Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale were once one of the hottest couples in the music industry. The No Doubt songstress began dating the Bush frontman in 1995, and they eventually tied the knot in 2002 and went on to welcome three sons.
However, their marriage came to an end in 2015 when Gwen filed for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences. Their marriage was finalized a year later, but not before Gwen went public with her relationship with country singer Blake Shelton.
Gwen and Blake had known each other for years, after both being cast as judges on The Voice. Not only was Gwen ending her marriage when their relationship was revealed, but Blake was also navigating a divorce from Miranda Lambert, whom he’d been married to since 2011.
Given the timing of their relationship, there’s been speculation for years over whether Gwen and Blake started seeing each other before they were officially single.
There are rumors that both of them remain on rocky terms with their ex, despite Gwen needing to co-parent her three children with her ex-husband. Here’s what we know about how Gavin feels about the situation.
What Happened Between Gavin Rossdale And Gwen Stefani?
Gavin and Gwen’s divorce shocked fans, as they were often viewed as one of the strongest long-term couples in Hollywood.
They released a joint statement upon announcing their divorce, saying, “While the two of us have come to the mutual decision that we will no longer be partners in marriage, we remain partners in parenthood and are committed to jointly raising our three sons in a happy and healthy environment.”
The former couple never gave the public a reason for their divorce, but rumors suggested infidelity was to blame. Following the announcement of their split, reports began suggesting Gavin had an affair with their nanny, which led Gwen to call off the marriage upon discovering.
The nanny, Mindy Mann, was reportedly her in 20s at the time of the affair. Reports said that Gwen learned something was going on when she discovered racy photos and text messages from Mindy to Gavin.
Gavin Rossdale Was Initially Accepting Of Gwen Stefani’s New Relationship
Gavin may have been the one having an extramarital affair, but Gwen wasted no time moving on after their divorce, as she was dating Blake Shelton before it was finalized. Gwen and Blake went on to marry in 2021.
For the most part, Gavin seems to have gotten on fine with the new man in Gwen’s life. In September 2019, a source told Hollywood Life that the Bush singer didn’t have a problem with Blake, and accepted him as a central role in his kids’ lives.

“Gavin is a great father, and he has got to a place with Gwen where they are friendly and they can coexist as parents and he has gotten to a place where he now totally OK with Blake being in his kids’ life,” the insider said.
Gavin respects Blake and knows he is a good guy,” they added. “Gavin will always be in his kid’s life but accepts what Blake brings to them. Gavin has been very mature with this whole situation that can always be hard for a family.”
But Gavin Rossdale Has Had A Hard Time With Blake Shelton And Gwen Stefani Recently
However, only months earlier, a different source said it was tough for Gavin to see his sons growing close to a new father figure.
“It is challenging for Gavin to watch his boys grow closer and more attached to Gwen’s boyfriend Blake,” the insider explained. “As Gwen’s relationship with Blake continues to grow stronger, Gavin struggles with how much quality time Blake spends with his sons, time that Gavin sometimes feels should be time that he is bonding with his own sons.”
Gavin may still be struggling with Blake’s relationship with the boys. Just last year, a source said Gavin had a problem after Blake publicly gushed about his wife’s children on social media.
“Gavin told Gwen to pass along a message to Blake: Cool it with the public lovefest,” a source told Life & Style. “He thinks it’s weird. If the shoe were on the other foot and they were Blake’s children, he wouldn’t like it either.” They added, “Blake is crossing a line.”
Moreover, it appears the children can sense the tension between their parents and step-father.
“The kids sense a pull […] They try their best to give Gavin a lot of attention, but they also like having Blake around rooting them on,” a separate source explained.
Gavin has never publicly admitted that he thinks of Blake, but if one thing is for sure, his co-parenting relationship with Gwen has been up and down over the years. While the exes seemed to be doing fine immediately following their divorce, a report from 2021 says they were barely speaking in the thick of the COVID pandemic.
“Gavin and Gwen don’t have a relationship except with the kids. They do not communicate often and it’s as minimal as possible,” the insider told Hollywood Life.
It’s very possible that Gavin could still have a problem with Blake, but if so, the ones who’ll suffer the most are the kids.
