Gregg Wallace still prominently displays framed photos of his former MasterChef counterpart, John Torode, on his walls, despite reports suggesting the two were “never friends.” Wallace was removed from the BBC series following an investigation that upheld over 40 misconduct allegations against him. Meanwhile, Torode also faced dismissal after a single accusation of using racist language was substantiated out of nine complaints.
Initially, Torode sought to distance himself from Wallace, expressing that the allegations against his co-host were “truly upsetting.” There were also rumors that the two hosts weren’t genuinely friends. A source from the show remarked to the BBC, “They clearly had good chemistry on camera, but interactions off-camera were rare.”
In 2023, Torode clarified their relationship by stating, “He’s a friend, don’t get me wrong, but I don’t hang out with him socially. We haven’t visited each other’s homes… it’s just not something we do.”
Despite Wallace’s specific requests regarding Torode in the dressing room, such as “don’t put anything on my table, don’t touch my stuff and stay on the left-hand side of the room until lunch,” Wallace still chooses to display framed photos of them together in his living room.
Recently, Wallace shared a photo on Instagram of himself with his son Sid, who was playing on a tablet. In the background, several framed RadioTimes covers featuring Wallace and Torode promoting MasterChef could be seen.
One cover showed them covered in cream with the headline: “Food fight!” and the slogan: “Cooking doesn’t get any messier than this!”
Another declared: “Dish of the day!” with another promo snap of the pair standing together, while a third cover bore the words: “We want more!” and showed the hosts sitting at a table together, cutlery in hand.
Gregg’s wall also included other magazine covers, including one from WeightWatchers magazine, and a newspaper clipping about him dating a younger woman, with the headline: “How does he do it?”
Also visible were a rugby team photograph, several maps and a signed plaque from Saturday Kitchen.
