Shortly after the release of their collaborative track “Marvin Gaye,” speculation regarding Charlie Puth and Meghan Trainor’s relationship began to swirl. One fan in 2015 tweeted: “Just watched the Marvin Gaye music video. Why aren’t @Meghan_Trainor and @charlieputh a couple?” While the pair remained mum on the relationship rumors, things came to a head when they performed their duet at the 2015 American Music Awards. After delivering a rather flirtatious performance, the two Grammy-nominated artists shocked fans when they took part in a passionate and long kiss.

While fans were quick to ship Trainor and Puth together after their makeout session, the two shut down any relationship rumors in shortly following their onstage appearance. “We’re friends … my whole vision when I made “Marvin Gaye” was for people to hear the record and to spontaneously just make out,” he said backstage after the performance. Trainor seemed to echo similar sentiments on Instagram, writing, “All about dat ass grab doe @charlieputh proud of you Charlie #imsingle.” In a 2016 interview on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” Puth doubled down on his aforementioned statement and even described the stunt as a “visual aesthetic” for the song.
