Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, moved to the United States in March 2020 after stepping down from their official duties in the British royal family. Although they settled down in Meghan’s side of the world of Southern California, the path to citizenship for the Prince of Wales hasn’t been easy.

Is Prince Harry a United States Citizen?

Prince Harry confirmed he was a United States citizen in April 2025.

Harry filed paperwork for a travel company he controls with Companies House, a British registry of company information, to inform authorities that he moved overseas and now has the United States listed as his “New Country/State Usually Resident,” according to The Washington Post.

The former royal owns at least 75 percent of Travalyst Ltd, a company founded in 2020 “to promote global awareness of the importance of sustainable tourism.”

Prince Harry Did Not Receive Special Treatment When Obtaining Visa

Prince Harry’s road to citizenship was a long road as it was the subject of an ongoing lawsuit in the United States. The Heritage Foundation, a Washington D.C.-based think tank, believed Harry may have lied about his past drug use in his visa application or received preferential treatment from the government. Harry spoke at large about his former use of narcotics in his 2023 memoir, Spare, and the Heritage Foundation argued that should have kept him from living and working in the U.S. U.S. visa requirements normally require applicants to disclose past and present drug use, as it can be considered groups for denial.

President Donald Trump was vocal that he “wouldn’t protect” Harry surrounding the inquiries about his immigration status. “I wouldn’t protect him … He would be on his own if it was down to me,” Donald told the Daily Express in February 2024.

In Touch previously reported the Heritage Foundation’s lawsuit against the Department of Homeland Security over Harry’s visa status and his former drug use was closed in September 2024. At the time, it was not clear why the case was closed or if Harry’s visa papers would be made public.

“[The case] comes about in the main because HRH [His Royal Highness] voluntarily — and for immense profit — admitted in writing to the elements of any number of controlled substance violations,” Heritage’s lawyers wrote in the 2024 filing. “The Duke of Sussex did so despite the fact that it is widely known that such admissions can have adverse immigration consequences for non-citizens and despite employing preeminent legal advisors on both sides of the Atlantic.”

Prince Harry’s U.S. legal records were made public in March 2025 as part of a Freedom of Information (FOI) request and the documents, which included a statement from a DHS official, revealed that he did not receive preferential treatment from authorities.

“This speculation by Plaintiffs does not point to any evidence of government misconduct,” the agency stated in one of the heavily redacted documents, per People. “The records, as explained above, do not support such an allegation but show the regulatory process involved in reviewing and granting immigration benefits which was done in compliance with the Immigration and Nationality Act, 8 U.S.C. § 1103 and applicable rules and regulations.”
