The premise of Netflix’s new show Building The Band is that 50 hopeful musicians must sort themselves into bands, but without ever laying eyes on each other. The innovative reality TV show encourages the singers to rely on each other’s vocals instead of focusing on appearances.
Once the groups have formed, the contestants are allowed to meet one another and interact. As it happens, in the latest chunk of episodes, we might be seeing a new budding romance between two of the competitors.
Alison And Conor Might Have A Blossoming Romance
Most of the show’s contestants are young people in their 20s who, once they form their group, move into an apartment with their bandmates. This allows them to maximize their time practicing together, getting to know one another’s style. For two of the cast members, however, it seems that romance has been on their minds instead.
The contestants, Australian-born Conor Smith and it-girl Alison Ogden, appear to hit it off starting in Episode 5. The two are in an all-boy and all-girl group, respectively, and the time they spend hanging out together ends up taking away from time they could be spending practicing with their band.
At one point in the series, Conor disappears from his shared apartment, only to return the following morning with an update about his potential romantic interest:
I had a very lovely night. We spent a lot of time talking about our emotions. We may have kissed. We went to bed at 5 a.m.
Though Conor’s bandmates are supportive of him, they do begin to question if Conor is acting selfishly, failing to think about his responsibility to the group. One of the other singers, Mason Watts, gently tells Conor that he should refrain from a “date two” and instead focus on their upcoming performance.
Conor’s Focus On Alison Might Hurt His Competition Chances
It seems like Mason’s concern about Conor’s priorities may have been for good reason; as the live performance approaches, we learn that Conor was often missing from or late to rehearsals because he was hanging out with Alison instead. Things get so bad that the other three bandmates decide they need to have a sit-down conversation with Conor.
Episode 7 captures the tense conversation between the boys, with Mason voicing their collective worry:
I don’t think any of us want you hanging out with Alison because it caused all this drama. That’s got us nervous going forward.
Though at first Conor explained that a romance with Alison “may have been sparked” and that he held “no regrets” about the way things had gone down, eventually he heard what his groupmates were saying and apologized. For a moment it seemed like he was going to bow out of the competition entirely, but finally he resolved to recommit to the band.
“I’m really sorry, if you’re still willing to have the old Conor, I’ll chill out. It’s a very good feeling that you boys are willing to look past that,” Conor said. “I shouldn’t have been like, focusing my time on Alison. It was almost like a brainwash,” he admitted.
The most recent episode of the season ends with the groups doing their live performances, where judges Nicole Scherzinger, Liam Payne, and Kelly Rowland weigh in. The episode ends before the announcement of which band is eliminated, meaning fans will have to tune in next week to see if Conor and his crew make it through.

Building The Band is a music competition reality series that takes a unique approach to forming the next big pop group. Premiering July 9, 2025, on Netflix, the show begins with 50 solo singers auditioning in blind, isolated pods, where they can only hear each other’s voices. Contestants swipe “like” or “pass” as they listen, focusing purely on vocal chemistry rather than looks or personality. From there, selected musicians join forces to form six separate bands, moving through a series of challenges including live performances, songwriting workshops, and branding exercises. The show emphasizes not just vocal talent but also teamwork, versatility, and group cohesion, with the goal of launching a real, fully developed music act by the end of the season.
Guiding the competition is a high-profile judging panel made up of music industry veterans: Nicole Scherzinger, Kelly Rowland, and the late Liam Payne, with hosting duties handled by AJ McLean. Each judge brings personal experience from global groups—Scherzinger from The Pussycat Dolls, Rowland from Destiny’s Child, and Payne from One Direction—offering both critique and hands-on mentorship to the contestants. Their feedback isn’t limited to vocal performance; they also focus on interpersonal dynamics, branding, and long-term career viability. Liam Payne’s participation adds an emotional layer to the series, as Building The Band marks his final project before his passing in 2024. Throughout the show, viewers witness not just the formation of new bands but also honest, often vulnerable conversations about fame, pressure, and what it takes to truly succeed as a collective rather than as a solo act.
