James May recently opened up about the possibility of reuniting with his long-time co-hosts Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond for a television comeback. This iconic trio embarked on an incredible 23-year journey together, starting with an unforgettable 15-year run on the BBC’s Top Gear, which then seamlessly transitioned to nearly a decade on the popular series, The Grand Tour.
Although The Grand Tour enjoyed immense success over its six seasons, the Amazon Prime show drew to a close with its special finale, One For The Road, in 2024. Reflecting on their decision to wrap up the show, James explained that the team felt they had “exhausted” its creative potential and were keen not to “overstay their welcome” with fans.
Both Jeremy and Richard shared this sentiment, emphasizing their desire for The Grand Tour to conclude on a high note while it remained beloved by its audience globally.
In a candid discussion on LBC this week, 63-year-old James May addressed whether this truly marks the end of the road for their dynamic partnership.
Confirming the dissolution of the production company that managed The Grand Tour last year, James added a hint of intrigue regarding a potential reunion: “You should never say never, should you? Because then someone might dig it up and hold it against you, but as of now, there’s nothing on the horizon.”
He also admitted he found it “slightly difficult” to “envisage” the trio making a comeback as “we’re knocking on a bit”.
“And there comes a point where you should let things lie,” he added. “There is a saying in showbusiness, isn’t there, that you should leave the audience wanting more and hopefully we have.”
“We always used to say, partly in jest, but actually we meant it, that the most difficult thing we had to do was to land it safely and not fly it into the cliffs,” he continued.
“And I think we just about did. But if you go on too long, you do end up flying it into the cliff.”
Since The Grand Tour was brought to an end the trio have embarked on their own adventures. Alongside presenting, Jeremy dived into the world of farming and is currently five seasons into his hit show Clarkson’s Farm.
The award-winning series documents challenges of him running Diddly Squat Farm, with the help of his team including right-hand man Kaleb Cooper and partner Lisa Hogan.
Richard has continued developing The Smallest Cog, his classic car restoration business and has also remained active on DriveTribe, founded by the trio, producing car reviews, workshop videos and challenges for YouTube.
He has also made appearances on various motoring and entertainment programmes, including a cameo in Clarkson’s Farm Season 4.
As for James, he fronted his travel series James May: Our Man In… from 2020 until 2024, when it was confirmed the show would not return for another series. The car enthusiast also fronted Amazon original, Oh Cook!, however it came to an end after two seasons.
Beyond television, the presenter continues to pursue entrepreneurial projects, including his James Gin brand, while producing digital content for his YouTube channel.
