TLC stars Jay Manuel and Pamela Chavez don’t let their medical conditions stand in the way of the fun they have in the bedroom. The new reality stars, who were both born with brittle bone disease, otherwise known as osteogenesis imperfecta type 3 (OI), recently opened up about their sex life.

“How does sex work for a couple that breaks bones so easily?” a producer from the reality series Jay & Pamela asked the couple in a clip shared by TLC’s official Instagram page on March 15. “Do you have to be extra careful?”

Jay, 28, replied by saying, “Careful isn’t even in the room with us when we’re having sex. I thought it would be. I thought we were going to be cautious when having sex, but we just take a risk. Risk it for a biscuit.”

Pamela, 30, also chimed in on the conversation.

“And then the next day, you’re like, ‘My back hurts,’” she said while jokingly mocking Jay.

This wasn’t the first time the couple has had some laughs about their sex life during confessionals in Jay & Pamela. In a previous clip, Jay opened up about the time things got a little wild between him and Pamela in bed.

“She’s the freak in the sheets,” Jay told the cameras. “One time when we had an intimate moment, she threw me against the wall. I was not expecting it. I just want that to be known. She’s the freak in all the sheets.”

In another scene, he laughed while telling Pamela, “If we had a little more privacy, I could fix that scoliosis for you. You know what I’m saying?”

OI is an inherited disorder that can be passed on by one or both parents, and it’s present at birth, according to John Hopkins Medicine. The site also explained that the symptoms in babies vary from each child. Those born with the disease “may have soft bones that break (fracture) easily, bones that are not formed normally, and other problems.”

John Hopkins Medicine stated that Type 3, the type Jay and Pamela have, is the “most severe type in babies who don’t die as newborns. At birth, a baby may have slightly shorter arms and legs than normal and arm, leg, and rib fractures.”

Pamela gave fans more details surrounding their diagnosis during an episode of season 1 of their reality show.

“It causes short stature, scoliosis, fragile bones – so we break easily,” she explained.

Jay said that together, he and Pamela had sustained “over 400 fractures” combined.

“It can be something as simple as rolling out of bed, taking a deep breath,” he explained, while Pamela added, “I literally have a broken rib right now.”

The couple was given grim odds of survival at young ages, and Jay revealed that his parents told him he “wouldn’t make it past 5 years old.”

Pamela and Jay, however, have done their best to keep their condition from restricting them from living their lives.

“People are always making assumptions about us and what we’re capable of,” Pamela said.
