The first episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live aired on January 26, 2003. Two decades later, the show is still going strong, while Kimmel also recently hosted the Oscars. Despite all of his success, Jimmy did admit that he’s at least starting to think about retirement, but fans are hoping that decision takes place in the distant future.
Jimmy Kimmel hasn’t been afraid to express himself on Live, while showing real emotions. In the following, we’ll take a look back at Kimmel’s emotional intro, discussing his son’s birth. Thankfully, Billy is doing great these days, but his family had a scare during his birth.
In addition, we’ll take a look back at other emotional moments that took place on Jimmy Kimmel Live. One of the moments had Kimmel in tears, discussing one his favorite comedians.
Jimmy Kimmel’s Son Billy Is Almost Six-Years-Old Today And Is Doing Great
Before we get into the details as to why Jimmy Kimmel got emotional over his son’s birth, it should be noticed that health wise, Billy is doing just fine. Kimmel gave an update on his son alongside People.
He revealed, “He’s doing great. He still needs one open-heart surgery, but he’s doing great.”
Kimmel would go on to reveal that his son still isn’t interested in surgeries, or the galas that his mom and dad attend. “He has no idea what we’re up to [tonight], nor would he care,” Kimmel laughed. “I tried to explain the heart surgery to him because he has a bit of scar down the center of his chest, and he has almost no interest.”
Kimmel is grateful for his son’s health, and he’s also thankful for supporting that causes and organizations that helped his son out.
“Our son, Billy, had two open-heart surgeries here, he was born with two heart defects, and they fixed them up real good, so we’re very grateful,” Kimmel explained.
“We never imagined that this organization that we’d supported financially and by hosting events for them would be a place that we needed to go — so that came as a bit of a shock, but it all worked out.”
Thankfully, all is well with Kimmel and his family, however, it was an emotional experience for Kimmel during his son’s birth, as he revealed on Live.
Jimmy Kimmel Got Emotional Discussing His Son’s Birth
Jimmy Kimmel had tears in his eyes even before he discussed the matter. Kimmel warned the audience that the story had a happy ending at the start of the story.

“You know I try not to get emotional, but it was a scary story,” he said, already tearing up. “And before I go into it, I want you to know it has a happy ending. OK? So when I’m telling this, don’t get too upset. Leave that to me.”
Kimmel described the experience, stating that it was hard to watch when it was revealed that Billy was suffering from a heart problem.
“So now more doctors and nurses and equipment come in. It’s — it’s a terrifying thing. You know, my wife is back in the recovery room, she has no idea what’s going on. And I’m standing in the middle of a lot of very worried-looking people — kind of like right now — who are trying to figure out what the problem is.”
“But basically the pulmonary valve was completely blocked, and he has a hole in the wall between the left and right sides of his heart.”
Kimmel took the classy road and thanked every doctor on Live by their full names, and credited the health care system and the individuals working at hospitals.
It Wasn’t The Only Time Jimmy Kimmel Couldn’t Hold It Together On Live
Jimmy Kimmel has shed tears multiple times on his late night program. Among the hardest to watch, included Kimmel’s heartfelt speech on gun violence, and how it needed to be stopped.
Kimmel also broke down into tears remembering Don Rickles, who was one of his favorite comedians. The host remembered his life on the show, in what was a very emotional moment.
“He was 90 years old. And I know it sounds crazy to say he was too young. But he was, because he was youthful and funny and sharp and generous,” Kimmel said in his opening monologue.
“He would always ask about my parents and my kids and really wanted to know how they were,” he said. “When my Uncle Frank passed away, I called him and asked him to be the guest on that show – which was a tough one. And he came and helped me through it. ”
It was a touching tribute and one that really showed how much the late comedian meant to Jimmy Kimmel.
