Joan Vassos, the inaugural star of The Golden Bachelorette, once shared several heartfelt moments with Chock Chapple before the couple ultimately ended their engagement.
Joan met 24 eligible men when the ABC reality series premiered in September 2024. By the finale, she had accepted Chockās proposal on the beaches of Bora Bora.
āFrom our first date in Disneyland, I thought I saw a future with you, and itās the first time I pictured a future with anybody else in a really long time,ā Joan told Chock during the final rose ceremony, which aired in November 2024. āAnd then tragedy hit your family and your mom passed away and you had to leave. I wanted you to go, but I was really worried that you werenāt going to make it back. Thatās when I realized that I couldnāt do this journey without you.ā
Before Chock proposed, Joan declared, āI waited till this moment in this amazing location to tell you that I love you and I want to spend the rest of my life with you.ā
In November 2026, Vassos and Chapple confirmed on social media that they had decided to end their engagement.
Hereās a look back at their relationship:
September 2024

Joan gave her first impression rose to Keith Gordon, but Chock quickly captured her attention. āHe was cute,ā she said during the premiere, which was filmed in summer 2024 and broadcast that September. Her reaction came after Chock stepped out of the limo and invited her to sample his signature āChock-a-noodle soup.ā
Joan chose Chock for the seasonās first one-on-one date, taking him to Disneyland for a day of rides and conversation. During the evening portion, they bonded over the loss of their longtime partners. Joanās husband, John Vassos, died of cancer in 2019, while Chockās fiancĆ©e, Kathy, died from brain cancer after the couple had spent nine years together.

October 2024

During his time on The Golden Bachelorette, Chock learned that his mother had died following a battle with stage four cancer. He left the show in an October 2024 episode to be with his family, then returned to continue his relationship with Joan. As part of his hometown date in Kansas, Chock introduced Joan to his family, and they honored his late mother together.
Joan later described their connection in Us Weeklyās cover story. āWe started talking and never stopped. It was so easy ā to the point where producers said, āHey, enjoy the atmosphere. Youāre just talking amongst yourselves.āā
November 2024

Chock proposed to Joan with a Neil Lane diamond during The Golden Bachelorette finale, which aired in November 2024. The couple later told Us that they planned to celebrate with an engagement party in Los Angeles before traveling to New York City to search for an apartment.
āThis first year, obviously, we have to kind of figure out life. Chock has a business in Kansas. I have kids and grandkids and Maryland. Iām not leaving Maryland, but he does have obligations in Kansas,ā Joan told Us. āWe know that weāre gonna spend time in Maryland and in Kansas, but then we have this really fun plan because both of us have always dreamed ā and weāre finally at this weird stage in life for making this dream come true ā that we live in a big city. Specifically, weāve always wanted to live in New York. So Chock surprised me and said, āI want us to go find a place.āā
November 2026
āTwo years ago, Chock and I took a leap of faith and got engaged during our season of The Golden Bachelorette, hoping we had found our forever,ā Vassos wrote on her Instagram Story. āWe spent the last two years living what we hoped would be the beginning of our love story, sharing our families, amazing adventures, laughter, and supporting each other through challenging times.ā
Vassos went on to announce that the couple had chosen to go their separate ways.
āSadly, our journey hasnāt turned out the way we had hoped, and we have decided to end our engagement,ā she wrote. āWe truly want each other to be happy, and Iām grateful for the chapter we shared.ā
