John Goodman is entering the next chapter of his career since The Conners and The Righteous Gemstones came to an end — and is embracing his new look following his 200-lb weight loss.

The actor, 73, attended the premiere of Smurfs in Los Angeles on Sunday, July 13, flaunting his weight loss with a huge smile on his face. Goodman wore a dark blue suit with a patterned tie and brown shoes for the red carpet outing. He voices Papa Smurf in the musical comedy, which also stars Rihanna, James Corden and Nick Offerman.

Goodman opened up about his weight loss journey in May 2016, revealing that he changed up his diet to kickstart his healthy lifestyle.

“I just stopped eating all the time,” he told ABC News at the time. “I’d have a handful of food, and it’d go to my mouth. I was just eating all the time. I was just eating alcoholically. In the old days, I would take three months out, lose 60 or 70 pounds, and then reward myself with a six-pack of Bud or whatever and just go back to my old habits.”

He said that this time around, he wanted to approach weight loss “slowly,” focusing on moving and exercising.

“I’m getting to the age where I can’t afford to sit still anymore,” Goodman noted. “And it gives me the energy to work, ‘cause work is very draining.”

As for what motivated the Roseanne alum to focus on his health and fitness, he said, “I just got tired, sick and tired of looking at myself. You’re shaving in the mirror, and you don’t want to look at yourself. It gets dangerous.”

Goodman revealed that he was keen on going for daily walks and boxing as a means of exercise.

“I dug it. Yeah. Nobody’s going to get hurt, but it’s just hitting the mitts and trying to learn,” he said about boxing in a June 2023 interview with The Rolling Stone, adding that he shed 200 lbs. “I never got good enough where I would trust myself to spar because once I get whacked in the face, I don’t know if I wouldn’t lose it.”

He continued, “But it’s usually just an hour, hour and a half of hitting the mitts, hitting the bags, learning footwork. It’s great.”

Goodman previously explained that he cut sugar from his diet amid his focus on fitness.

“I know it sounds sappy, but it was a waste,” he told People in August 2010. “It takes a lot of creative energy to sit on your ass and figure out what you’re going to eat next … I wanted to live life better.”

Smurfs marks Goodman’s first project since both The Conners and The Righteous Gemstones aired their series finales.

“It’s really hard,” Goodman told Us Weekly in April of saying goodbye to The Conners and his onscreen family. “It’s something I’m going to miss for a while. I’m old and resistant to change.”
