Throughout The Bear’s four seasons, the hit TV show has stood out for things like great storytelling and scenes that were unbearable to watch. Another one of the things that has made The Bear special is that it has featured a slew of cameo appearances from noteworthy stars. Alongside actors like Jamie Lee Curtis, who impressed Jeremy Allen White, John Mulaney was a surprising addition to The Bear’s cast. Despite that, John has made three The Bear appearances to date.
Since John typically doesn’t appear in movies or shows that are of The Bear’s caliber, it is fascinating to see what he has said about the show. For example, it is interesting to see that John explained why working on The Bear was “intense” while still being “the most fun.”
John Mulaney Explained What Made Filming His First The Bear Cameo “Intense” And “The Most Fun”
Since The Bear has featured so many cameos, it makes perfect sense that fact has been a regular topic of discussion among fans. After all, there are so many aspects of the show’s cameo appearances that are worthy of discussion.
One of the most interesting aspects of The Bear’s cameo appearances has been who has been chosen to show up. Celebrities who are serious actors, culinary figures, wrestlers, and legends have all been chosen to make their marks on The Bear.
Still, it is surprising that John Mulaney was tapped to cameo on The Bear since he has never been known for his acting career. After he made his first cameo appearance. John explained how “intense” filming The Bear was even though it was “the most fun.”
In June 2024, John spoke to Variety about his first cameo appearance on The Bear, which happened during the show’s second season.

While talking to the outlet, John spoke about how much he enjoyed the filming process for his first The Bear episode.
“Sitting at that dinner table in between takes was some of the most fun I’ve ever had in my career.”
However, as anyone who remembers John’s first episode of The Bear, “Fishes,” will likely remember, it featured the show’s characters fighting passionately. As a result, it shouldn’t surprise anyone that filming that episode wasn’t all fun.
Most memorably, The Bear episode “Fishes” featured characters portrayed by Bob Odenkirk and Jon Bernthal loudly arguing.
In June 2024, Screen Rant published a ranking of every episode of The Bear that had been released up until that point. That article named “Fishes” as the best episode of The Bear ever.
While speaking to Variety, John stated that seeing Jon and Bob filming that scene was an intense experience for him.
“When we were shooting — sitting down the table from [Bob] Odenkirk at full throttle and [Jon] Bernthal – and in the same room about to go at it was… intense.”
On top of Bob and Jon’s characters having a loud fight, Jame Lee Curtis’ The Bear character also got involved in the episode’s drama in a major way.
Widely regarded as one of the highlights of The Bear, Jamie Lee Curtis’ performance on the show has received major accolades. Most notably, The Television Academy’s website states that Jamie Lee Curtis’ The Bear performance won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actress In A Comedy Series in 2024.
During his Variety interview, John hilariously described how getting yelled at by Jamie Lee Curtis felt to him.
“Being yelled at by Donna, as Jamie Lee Curtis did, is like an Amtrak train going and not stopping at your stop. It blew me away.”
During the same interview, John reflected on how he felt about the cast of The Bear while he was working with them.
Throughout the history of The Bear, it has often felt like the show has been nearly universally praised by critics. As a result, many of the show’s cast members have been nominated for and won major awards because of their performances. Not only that, The Bear has also been a commercial success since it has been viewed by millions of people.
As a result of how successful the show has been, The Bear‘s cast would have been riding high by the time they were filming the second season.
While talking to Variety, John praised The Bear’s cast for not having huge egos and credited series creator, Christopher Storer, for setting the tone.
“Everyone at The Bear was already aware of the show’s success by the time of the season two episode I did. I’ve never seen a group of people deal better with success and be humble and welcoming. And that’s from Chris Storer and on down to Jeremy and everybody.”
The Bear’s Creator Christopher Storer Was A John Mulaney Fan Before Casting Him On The Show
For all the accolades John Mulaney has won as a comedian and performer, he has never been known as an actor. Considering how many actors would kill for a role on The Bear, it is almost shocking that The Bear creator Christopher Storer chose to cast John on the show. However, the casting choice makes more sense once you know that Christopher is a big fan of John’s.
In June 2024, Christopher spoke to IndieWire about John. During that interview, Christopher described his friendship with John and why he is a fan of the comedian.
“John’s one of my favorite people in the world, and I think long before we were friends, I was such a fan of his, not only as a performer, but also as a writer. John has such a hyper-specific style of storytelling, and he has this kind of hyper-specific confidence.”
During the same IndieWire interview, Christopher explained why he cast John on The Bear.
“I always say John’s a natural born filmmaker, too. I’ve never looked at him as strictly a comedian or a writer. As someone who’s directed him in something he’s acted in, I think he’s truly a gifted actor as well. When people ask me, ‘Why did you cast John in ‘The Bear?,’ it’s because when you look at him on stage, he’s one of our finest storytellers. It’s that simple. To do that every night in front of thousands of people, you have to be a pretty damn good actor, you know? You have to really be able to not only time out your set and craft your jokes, but also you’re performing at a lot of people every day, and you’re naturally going to become a hell of a performer that way.”
Clearly, Christopher has a lot of respect for John as a person and performer.
