Julia Garner superbly portrayed Anna Delvey on the hit Netflix series Inventing Anna. Even Anna Delvey herself had a fresh take on the actress’ portrayal of herself. Other than the much talked about mixed Russian and German accent of JulIa Garner, she thrived in the role.

She didn’t immediately see herself as the titular role, and she was really surprised when she was chosen to play the lead role. Upon receiving the news that she got the part, Garner made sure that she will be able to portray the role supremely.

Unlike other actors who went to drastic methods in portraying their roles in a film, Julia Garner believes that she should not be like Anna offscreen. Thankfully, the actress can easily get into character once the cameras start rolling.

Julia Garner immensely prepared to portray Anna Delvey in the drama TV miniseries Inventing Anna. She even went to prison to visit the famed con artist, but one thing she never did was to be like Anna off-cam. Some actors might resort to method acting and still portray their roles even when the cameras aren’t rolling, but Julia was never like that.

Anna Delvey is known to easily discard people as she pleases, Julia Garner loved socializing with the actors on set. Rather than utilizing the method acting route, Julia halts her Anna portrayal once the cameras are off.

When asked about it, she said, “I like to know the people that I’m working with, and I like to know what their energetic tone is, and there can be a rhythm within the scene. And everybody was also just so lovely, all the actors.”

The actress believes that Anna was never really isolated. She continued, “But also Anna was talking to all of them, so it wasn’t like I was going to isolate myself when Anna was, you know, hanging out with her girlfriends in Morocco, or whatever.”

Julia Garner Saw Anna Delvey In A Different Light

Although they were very different and Anna went to extreme measures to get what she wants, the actress never judged Anna. Not even one bit. The actress believes that she should not have hesitations and judgment towards Anna since it will affect her portrayal of the character.

The actress wanted to be genuine in her role for Netflix series Inventing Anna, and she believes that the audience might see through it if she judges her character.

Garner said, “If you start judging your character, you shouldn’t be playing the character, because the camera doesn’t lie. The camera picks up everything.”

Rather than judging Anna, Julia saw her in a different light. The world may see Anna as a fraudster and a con artist, but Julia saw Anna’s determination. She said, “Anna did not want to fail, at all. She went to the nth degree so she wouldn’t fail in front of people, but she kept on digging herself in a deeper hole.”

She continued, “And with the fear of failure, behind that is a deep-rooted fear of rejection. And behind the fear of rejection is not being okay with your identity. To me, that’s what the project is about. It’s about people struggling with their identity, with their self-worth, with the fear of failure.”

Julia Garner drew inspiration from the Caravaggio art while portraying as Ruth in Netflix crime drama series Ozark, but when it came to portraying Anna Delvey, she had a different visual reference.

The actress believes that there’s no other perfect inspiration to portray Anna Delvey than Anna Delvey herself. The actress said, “It’s interesting, because Anna’s a real person, right? My biggest inspiration for Anna was Anna. I had these taped interviews—they’re not online, I got them exclusively. “

Meeting Anna in real life also helped the actress tremendously, she was able to imitate Anna’s mannerisms. The actress continued, “So I was mimicking her voice or getting to really start with her dialect and with her different, like, how she moves her body, from those tapes. But also with the trial photos, really looking closely at those trial photos. So Anna was really my biggest inspiration for playing Anna.”
