Riley Burruss is no stranger to reality TV. Still, while fans have seen glimpses of her life as she grew up, thanks to her mom, Kandi Burruss’ being a main cast member on The Real Housewives of Atlanta, Riley has since pursued a career in the entertainment industry for herself. And she has done this by appearing on the series Next Gen NYC!

The Bravo show is in its first season. It features other kids of Real Housewives stars, including Kim Zolciak’s daughter Ariana Biermann, Teresa Giudice’s daughter Gia Giudice, and Meredith Marks’ son Brooks Marks. Kandi has discussed how she had some hesitations about Riley starring on a reality TV show (despite her featuring on Real Housewives from when she was six). “It’s your baby, you know what I mean?” she told People. “People already be trying to say crazy stuff about my child online and other celebrity kids.”

She continued, “When it’s her out front, it’s like really nothing I could do to shelter her. Because now it’s really, all eyes are on you. You’re not just catching a stray. It’s like people can really just focus on you and say whatever they want to say and for sure so I’m scared. Oh Lord. I’m scared of what she gonna be doing on there, child.”

Kandi is right that Riley’s decision to become a reality TV star opens her up to criticism, but could she have learned from her mom’s experience on Real Housewives? What we do know is that Kandi has offered her daughter advice.

Kandi is “scared” and has reservations about Riley appearing on Next Gen NYC. Still, having spent so many years in front of the cameras, Kandi is in a unique position where she can offer her daughter advice on navigating her new normal. Kandi is also more open-minded about the experience. “There’s nothing that my daughter’s gonna do that I’m gonna be like, ‘Oh, I’m never gonna talk to you,'” she told People.

Kandi also acknowledged how, in her past, she has done “some wild stuff” and “said wild things on TV.”

Speaking of the advice her mom gave her, Riley told Bravo Bravo F’ing Bravo with Kate Chastain in May how Kandi told her “to be true to myself.” She added, “Like, ‘Don’t be fake for the cameras; just be honest, be true, and you’re gonna be good.'”

Riley reflected on the differences between fans watching her as a child and those who watch her now as an adult. “I think now, it’s interesting seeing the difference between being kind of my mom’s sidekick to now being the main character,” Riley told Chastain. “It’s really nice, and I’m excited.” Indeed, all eyes are now on Riley, but the feedback on Instagram about her casting has been overwhelmingly positive.

She has also adopted a more positive narrative than the drama that sometimes accompanies the Real Housewives, including reconnecting with Ariana Biermann. The two young women are also eager to put an end to their mothers’ feud.
