Kiefer Sutherland recalls ‘extraordinary’ day with Rob Reiner before his gruesome murder

Kiefer Sutherland recently reflected on a remarkable experience he had with director Rob Reiner during the filming of a famous scene from “A Few Good Men.”

Sutherland vividly remembers Jack Nicholson delivering his iconic line as Colonel Nathan Jessup, “You can’t handle the truth!” in a gripping courtroom scene. This anecdote is part of an upcoming television special titled “CBS News: Rob Reiner — Scenes from a Life.”

Recalling the moment, Sutherland described how the set fell silent after Nicholson’s powerful performance. Reiner approached Nicholson and quietly asked if he wanted to do another take. Nicholson, known for his dedication, replied, “Well, we’re here,” leading to yet another extraordinary take.

Sutherland also mentioned that Reiner, originally intending to film all day, decided differently after witnessing the scene’s intensity.

“They had planned to shoot throughout the day,” Sutherland, now 58, recounted of the 1992 Oscar-winning movie. “But Rob looked around and said, ‘I couldn’t ask for anything more, so you guys all have the rest of the day off.'”

Sutherland was part of the all-star cast that included Nicholson, Tom Cruise, Demi Moore, Kevin Bacon and Cuba Gooding, Jr., among others.

“CBS News: Rob Reiner — Scenes from a Life” is set to air on the network on Dec. 21.

Rob, 78, and his wife, Michele Reiner, 70, were found dead in their Brentwood, Los Angeles, home on Dec. 14.

Sources subsequently told The Post that the couple’s daughter, Romy, discovered their bodies that afternoon, having suffered multiple stab wounds and slit throats.

Their son Nick, 32, was arrested on Sunday evening in downtown Los Angeles and incarcerated at Los Angeles’ Twin Towers Correctional Facility, which The Post reported earlier this week is infamous for its “inhumane” conditions.

A law enforcement source told People on Saturday that the screenwriter remains on suicide watch and is in solitary confinement at the facility.

He faces charges including two counts of first-degree murder — with a special circumstance of multiple murders and allegation of using a knife — in connection with Rob and Michele’s violent deaths.

He is expected to plead not guilty by reason of insanity at an arraignment scheduled for Jan. 7.

Rob, Michele, and Nick showed up at Conan O’Brien’s annual star-studded Christmas party on Saturday night, prior to Rob and Michele’s deaths, where Nick was said to have clashed with both his parents and “Saturday Night Live” alum Bill Hader.

“They had had an argument at Conan’s holiday party, and Rob had been telling people that they’re scared for Nick and scared that his mental state was deteriorating,” an insider told The Post of the family’s outing.

NBC reported that Nick interrupted Hader as he attempted to have a private conversation at the soirée, staring at the comedian before “storming off” after being reprimanded.

Sources told TMZ on Friday that Nick was diagnosed with schizophrenia weeks ahead of Rob and Michele’s deaths, and that he was “under the care of a psychiatrist for mental illness.”

The outlet also reported that a change in Nick’s medications about a month prior to the murders allegedly made him “out of his head.”

Rob and Michele met on the set of “When Harry Met Sally” and married in 1989. Along with Nick and Romy, they shared son Jack, and Rob’s adopted daughter Tracy from a previous marriage.
