Among the most demanding reality TV experiences currently airing is Special Forces: World’s Toughest Test. This intense competition places celebrities in the midst of physical challenges that closely mirror real military training, offering no easy way out.
In the current season, Kody Brown, the head of the family from Sister Wives, is one of the contestants still enduring the rigorous tests. Throughout his journey, Kody has been introspective about how these challenges are transforming him as a man, partner, and father.
Viewers familiar with Sister Wives across its many seasons will remember that Kody’s relationship with his 18 children has been complex, with many voicing their grievances. Allegations of favoritism and unequal treatment among the children have surfaced on numerous occasions.
Kody Struggled To Connect With His Kids In The Past
Those who have kept up with Sister Wives for its several seasons will recall that many of Kody’s 18 children had gripes with their father. There were many occasions when he was accused of having favorites, giving preferential treatment to some of the kids over others.
More recently, this has meant that some of Kody’s kids have put some distance between them in their adult years. It seems, however, that the difficultly of the tasks on Special Forces is also making him reflect on the challenges of being a parent.
While on a recent episode, Kody partnered up with fellow contestant Shawn Johnson for an exercise simulating a hostage rescue. Afterward, Kody was so emotional from all the decision-making he’d had to do that it led him to open up to the cameras about his regrets as a father:
I’m in a place in my life now where I’m very willing to say that I’ve been wrong… I didn’t know s*** about being a dad and husband and I thought I did. I really thought I did, and I misunderstood that, and I did it wrong in so many ways.
Kody Has Resolved To Be More Honest Moving Forward
Kody’s tenure on the show hasn’t been without impact mentally. In the same episode, he went on to note that he was interested in “repair[ing] all the relationships with [his] family and even [his] ex-wives,” even though he knew it would be a challenge.
In a continued conversation in his confessional, Kody elaborated on how the staff of the show pushing him during challenges has had an effect on him:
I am sorry that I’ve hurt or offended my children. And that kind of humility I need back in my life. [The Special Forces staff] want honesty from me on stuff I’ve been deceiving myself about. What they are saying to me is ‘get around your facade and stop protecting yourself and be honest with yourself.’
Only time will tell if Kody’s militant experience on the show will result in an actual behavior change that makes it back to his family. In the meantime, the drama continues to unravel on this season of Sister Wives.
So far this season, we’ve seen Janelle grapple with whether she wants to get a “spiritual divorce” from Kody after being together for decades, and one of his eldest daughters, Madison, has been quite vocal about the rift she still feels with her father.
Even in Kody’s last remaining marriage to Robyn, things don’t appear to be totally smooth sailing. In a rather awkward conversation earlier in the season, Kody confessed to having a higher sex drive than his wife, and that the two had yet to figure out how to navigate that difference.
