In a moment that could easily be described as iconic, Nicole Kidman effortlessly diverted attention from Lauren Sánchez and her husband, Jeff Bezos, at the 2026 Vanity Fair Oscars Party. While Sánchez and the Amazon mogul navigated the red carpet, Kidman swept in, captivating the photographers’ lenses. Social media users quickly turned this celebrity encounter into a meme-worthy event, applauding Kidman’s undeniable allure. “Even billionaires can’t compete with genuine star power,” quipped one user on X, the platform previously known as Twitter, noting, “Nicole Kidman just demonstrated how charisma can eclipse wealth at the Vanity Fair Oscar Party.”
Fast forward a few months, and Kidman surprisingly seemed to team up with Sánchez at the 2026 Met Gala, an event that ignited protests and led to some celebrities boycotting due to Sánchez and Bezos’ involvement. So, what brought this unexpected alliance about?
In a widely shared photo, the “Moulin Rouge” actress is seen posing alongside Sánchez and former Vogue Editor-In-Chief Anna Wintour, the gala’s leading chairperson. Though the trio isn’t captured conversing, Kidman’s presence certainly added a viral flair to the moment, inadvertently enhancing Sánchez’s public image (even if Kidman’s dazzling red sequined dress stole the show). However, it’s premature to assume a budding friendship between the two.
We can only speculate on how Kidman felt about sharing the limelight with Sánchez at the Met Gala, a venue renowned for its extravagant celebrity fashion. The reality is that both women were key figures in this year’s gala. Kidman took on the role of a celebrity chair, joining the ranks of Venus Williams, Beyonce, and Wintour. Meanwhile, Sánchez and Bezos, still one of the world’s wealthiest individuals, contributed significantly as 2026’s honorary co-chairs. With such roles, a photo of Kidman and Sánchez together was bound to happen.
Whether Kidman purposefully embraced her moment with Sánchez is beside the point. At the Met Gala, the only viewpoint that truly matters is Wintour’s, as she has been the ultimate authority on the guest list since the ’90s. Wintour expressed her full support in comments to CNN, describing Bezos as a “great lover of costume and obviously of fashion.” Regarding Bezos and Sánchez’s substantial contribution to the event, which funds the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, Wintour remarked, “We’re very grateful for her incredible generosity, so we’re thrilled she’s part of the night.” As always, financial contributions speak volumes.
Nicole Kidman and Lauren Sánchez were just representing the Met Gala
There’s no way to know for sure what Nicole Kidman thought about letting Lauren Sánchez share a little of her shine at the Met Gala, which has been the site of some wild celebrity looks over the years. The fact of the matter is, both women played a substantial role in this year’s event. Kidman served as one of the gala’s celebrity chairs, in addition to Venus Williams, Beyonce, and Anna Wintour. Meanwhile, Sánchez and Jeff Bezos, who is still one of the richest people in the world, unloaded a boatload of cash to become 2026’s honorary co-chairs. So, if you think about it, a photo between Kidman and Sánchez was inevitable.
Whether Kidman intentionally embraced her moment with Sánchez isn’t really the point, though. When it comes to the Met Gala, the only opinion that holds weight is Wintour’s, given she’s held full creative control of the guest list since the ’90s. Apparently, she was totally on board. In comments to CNN, Wintour likened Bezos to a “great lover of costume and obviously of fashion.” When discussing Bezos and Sánchez’s hefty donation to the event, which supports the operation of the Metropolitan Museum of Arts Costume Institute, Wintour said, “We’re very grateful for her incredible generosity so we’re thrilled she’s part of the night.” So, as usual, money talks.
