Love Is Blind: Germany Season 1 Episode 3 Recap: See You Later

We’re quickly nearing the end of the pods on Love Is Blind: Germany Season 1. As the cast members wrap up their dates on the reality TV series, they must decide whether they’ll leave engaged.

For some, the decision is an easy one. For others, however, choosing between their top two connections proves to be a brutal trial.

Choices, Choices, Choices

The drama I was hoping for in the first two episodes is finally coming to pass: sure enough, a love triangle is budding between Tolga, Hannah, and Shila. Tolga himself is so confused that sometimes he even mixes up the two women’s names when talking to the cameras, solidly securing him as one of my least favorite cast members of the season.

Meanwhile, Fabio seems to have decided on his feelings for Shella, going on to stress about how he’ll break the news to Alberta. Back in the women’s quarters, Shella tries to explain to Alberta how well her dates are going with Fabio, trying to be helpful but hurting her instead.

Shella’s other match, Pascal, isn’t done fighting for their connection, and on their next date he writes her a letter telling her exactly how he feels for her. Fortunately or unfortunately, this is exactly what Shella’s needed to hear from him, only making the situation more confusing.

Next, we see Marcel and Jen’s reveal, which is full of nervous giggles. Once they sit down, however, Jen remarks how quiet Marcel is, noting that it makes her feel a little unsettled. She tells the cameras that it makes her a bit apprehensive:

It’s going to be hard if he doesn’t talk more. Because communication is exactly the thing we connected over in the pods.

When we get back to Tolga, he still refuses to choose between his top two choices. I appreciated that, to her credit, Hannah puts her foot down and tells Tolga that it’s up to him now to make his decision, as she’s made her feelings for him clear. She and Shila also have a frank conversation, saying that if they discover Tolga has been whispering the same sweet nothings to both of them, that would change their feelings, which I very much respect. (Certainly this spin-off doesn’t have the same woman vs. woman pettiness that prior seasons have harbored, which comes as a refreshing change.)

A Surprise Flip Flop Happens

The next time Alberta sees Fabio, he tells her he’s falling in love with someone else and wants to end things. I feel especially bad for Alberta, for whom falling for someone who doesn’t reciprocate her feelings is a pattern. Another striking pattern so far is that individuals tend to take romantic rejection pretty well; perhaps because of the generally frank approach to discussions, people are more primed to being turned down when the time comes.

There’s a huge twist when Shella tells Fabio that he actually wants to explore her connection with Pascal instead, going back on their last conversation. She tells the cameras that she’s sure of her decision:

I realized that Pascal is the right one for me, even if that means I end up with no proposal.

The next tough conversation is between Tolga and Shila. Shila’s frustrated that she’s still being made to wait, especially after he’s already admitted she’s his first choice. When he gets back to the men’s quarters, he tells the others he’s realized he gets more butterflies with Shila.

We pick up with Medina and Sally, whose bond has primarily been about their love for God. It feels like there’s at least one couple each season who bonds over their faith, and, in my experience, it can cause the individuals to overlook their other incompatibilities in favor of this shared similarity.

I was thrilled to see things end on a happy note for Shella; though Pascal had previously doubted whether he was ready for marriage, he ends up proposing to her, and she excitedly accepts. At their reveal, they share a sweet peck (rather chaste compared to the other reveals) before they go their separate ways.

At the end of the episode, Tolga proposes to Shila, finally making his choice, and she says yes. They’re followed closely behind by Medina and Sally, who also get engaged. Their in-person reveal, however, feels awkward and a little clunky. The two exchange a couple of stiff hugs, and Sally bids him goodbye with a lame, “See you later.”

Once she’s alone, Sally sheds tears over how uncomfortable the encounter was. Now we’re finally getting somewhere! If my theory proves correct, their shared faith alone might not be enough for an entire marriage to stand on, especially if they lack serious compatibility in other areas.
