Drama has erupted around Love Island USA star Huda Mustafa, a beloved figure from her season who won fans over with memorable catchphrases like “I’m a mommy.” However, her recent actions have sparked controversy, putting her in a challenging position.
The trouble began during a live social media session where Huda interacted with fans. Her intention was to connect in a lighthearted manner, but the situation quickly became problematic when an individual used a racial slur, and Huda seemed to laugh in response.
The incident occurred while Huda was preparing to front a campaign for Huda Beauty thanks to a new partnership. During the live session, she was accompanied by her boyfriend, Louis, and they took calls from fans. Unfortunately, one caller used the n-word while referencing fellow Love Island contestant Olandria Carthan, leading to backlash over Huda’s reaction.
Huda Was Dropped From Her Huda Beauty Campaign
The issue arose when Huda, who was slated to be the face for Huda Beauty in the recent brand partnership, went live on social media with her boyfriend, Louis. As the pair were on the stream, they took calls from strangers, and one of them ended up using the n-word in reference to another Love Island cast member, Olandria Carthan.
The incident happened quickly, and Huda claimed she was so shocked hearing the slur that she didn’t have time to react. That said, while still on the live stream, both she and Louis could be seen giggling before hanging up, a reaction which deeply upset fans.
After the live stream, Huda beauty released a statement saying that they took racism very seriously, and that they would be dropping Huda from their campaign. The image shared on the brand’s official Instagram account noted that they felt that Huda’s recent behavior was not in accordance with their own values, and that, at least for the time being, they had decided to end their partnership with her.
The caption of the post made it clear that they were not trying to get the reality TV star canceled:
This action was taken not because of any creator or influencers content, this was taken due to the lack of seriousness around the issue and to people close to us who were offended by the actions during the live. Please remember this is about accountability not canceling people.
Huda Issued An Official Apology
Since the incident, Huda has come out to apologize for her reaction to the word. She shared an official statement, and also said that she would be making a contribution to the NAACP out of her personal earnings:
I apologize for my immediate reaction. My reaction in the moment came from being caught off guard, not from finding the word or situation funny. I want to be clear that I do not condone or tolerate anyone who uses such language.
Despite Huda’s apology, the brand has chosen not to resume working with her for the time being. Some fans seemed a bit split about Huda’s words, with some in shock that she could laugh at a slur in the first place, while others commended her for her professional response.
“You responded beautifully!! took accountability, apologized, and donated. THAT’S how you do it !! 🤍🤍” wrote one fan in the comments. “We love you Huda. God cannot take away what is meant for you. This will pass and you will become stronger and better,” added another.
