Just after the highly anticipated Love Island All Stars made its American debut, Love Island USA Season 6 star Hannah Smith was formally charged with two felonies in Cobb County, Georgia.
Hannah was part of what evolved into a reality TV cultural phenomenon this summer, when the sixth season of the American version of Love Island became a massive sleeper hit for Peacock.
As we recently reported, the runaway success of Love Island USA Season 6 came as a massive shock, not only to Peacock, but to the show’s titular Islanders — who had no idea just how famous they’d become during their time at the villa.
Season 6 was nearly magical on several levels, from the Islanders’ camaraderie to the fans’ commitment to the show and the fandom — and when reunion time rolled around in August, fame had begun to become a problem for the cast.
Islander Daniela shared a semi-vague but emotional TikTok around the time the reunion was filmed, alluding to a rude awakening awaiting cast members after the show wrapped, one which took a toll on their mental health.
In short, coming back to the real world was a more difficult experience than most seemed to anticipate, and few Islanders were prepared for their abrupt fame.
Back in October, we reported that Hannah had been arrested in Atlanta, and in January, she was charged in connection with that arrest.
Hannah Was Charged With Two Felonies
Although Hannah’s arrest came to light in October, she was arrested at a Gracie Abrams concert on September 30.
Hannah’s arrest could have come and gone without anyone noticing … but Love Island USA fans on Reddit don’t miss a trick.
On October 8, the same day we covered it, a user on r/loveislandsnarking shared a thread – “Did Hannah get arrested?” – and it was largely ignored.
Later that day, a similar post appeared on r/LAInfluencerSnark, and it included a mugshot:
It seemed the second of the two threads got everyone’s attention, and news outlets began reporting on Hannah’s arrest.
Before her arrest, Hannah was allegedly escorted from the Gracie Abrams concert’s venue — after which she allegedly both attempted to punch and verbally threatened an officer.
In our coverage, we explained:
“Hannah was [arrested on] two counts, ‘including terroristic threats and willful obstruction of a law enforcement officer,’ both felonies.
“She was released on $8,000 bond, and as a condition of her release, must abstain from alcohol and agree to substance use testing.”
On Friday, January 17, People was among entertainment news sources reporting on new developments involving Hannah’s arrest.
According to documents obtained by the magazine, Hannah was formally charged on Wednesday:
“On Wednesday, Jan. 15, Cobb County prosecutor Sonya Allen charged Smith with felonies of obstruction of officers and terroristic threats, according to court documents.
“Smith ‘knowingly and willfully obstruct Cobb County Police Department Officer Kayla Winkfield, in the lawful discharge of her official duties by offering to do violence to said person, by lunging at and attempting to punch and kick Officer Kayla Winkfield,’ prosecutors allege in the charging document.”
According to TMZ, Hannah’s lawyer previously told them the Love Island USA star has no memory of the arrest, adding: “Hannah is deeply troubled by these events. She regrets any actions she took that offended anyone, including law enforcement.”
