Luigi Mangione, who is charged with killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, has finally spoken out following his high-profile arrest. As if taking a cue from Justin Baldoni, his legal team launched a website featuring his first public statement since being taken into custody.

“I am overwhelmed by – and grateful for – everyone who has written me to share their stories and express their support. Powerfully, this support has transcended political, racial, and even class divisions, as mail has flooded MDC from across the country, and around the globe,” the statement from Luigi shared on Friday, February 14, read. “While it is impossible for me to reply to most letters, please know that I read every one that I receive. Thank you again to everyone who took the time to write. I look forward to hearing more in the future.”

The website also included other information including the names of those on Luigi’s legal team, frequently asked questions, and a way for people to make contributions to the Maryland native, 26. Luigi’s lawyers also explained on the site that it was launched due to “the extraordinary volume of inquiries and outpouring of support” and its purpose was to “provide answers to frequently asked questions, accurate information about his cases, and dispel misinformation.”

They concluded, “The intent is to share factual information regarding the unprecedented, multiple prosecutions against him.”

On December 4, 2024, Brian was gunned down in front of his hotel in Midtown Manhattan. The shooting was caught on camera with security footage, which showed a masked individual walking up to Brian from behind before shooting him in the back. After Brian stumbled into a wall, the person walked up and shot him several more times. Brian was then transported by an ambulance to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Less than a week later, Luigi was arrested at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania. Luigi allegedly had a “ghost gun,” several fake I.D. cards and a “manifesto” on his person when police placed him under arrest. In the manifesto allegedly written by Luigi, he criticized the healthcare industry and claimed it was corrupted and driven by profit.

Luigi was charged with first-degree murder, along with several other charges. He pleaded not guilty.

Since his arrest, Luigi has garnered a cult-like following, with some viewing him as an anti-hero. However, his lawyer, Karen Friedman Agnifilo, has expressed concern that his growing notoriety could impact his right to a fair trial.

“I am very concerned about my client’s right to a fair trial in this case. He is being prejudiced by some statements made by public officials,” Friedman Agnifilo said in a statement, per ABC News. “He is a young man, and he is being treated like a human ping pong ball.”

She specifically pointed out Luigi’s perp walk where he was seen being escorted by a group of heavily armed guards and police officers. A photo of the incident quickly went viral and many thought the intent was to make Luigi appear dangerous, but several thought it only heightened his likeability.

“I said the other day that it seemed like they are trying to make Luigi Mangione look like Batman … but, I guess they are trying to make him look like Superman,” wrote one X user who shared a photo of Luigi next to a scene from Superman.

Another added, “If you’re trying to make him the coolest guy alive you’re doing a good job. If you are trying to point out how much money of ours you waste …. you’re also doing a good job.”

Luigi’s next court appearance will be on February 21.
