Margaret Qualley's famous mum exposed as she's snubbed from the Oscars

As the Oscars are set to take place tonight, Margaret Qualley has been in the spotlight due to a perceived snub by the academy towards The Substance star. This has led fans to uncover that the actress comes from an incredibly famous family.

Qualley made her acting debut in 2013’s Palo Alto alongside Emma Roberts, but it wasn’t until 2021 that her career truly took off following the success of the Netflix show Maid.

The miniseries saw her character Alex grapple with the challenges of escaping an abusive relationship, dealing with homelessness and finding work as a single mother.

With three Emmy and Golden Globe nominations, Qualley quickly became a favourite among producers. She had a standout year in 2024, landing roles in Kinds of Kindness, Drive-Away Dolls, and The Substance.

The actress’s diverse range of performances within a single year has garnered her significant attention from both the public and media. Many fans have only just realised that Qualley was destined for Hollywood, not only because of her impressive performances but also because of her family connections.

Maid received acclaim for its depiction of domestic violence and the experience of living with bipolar disorder. In the series Alex’s mother Paula is diagnosed with the mental health condition.

Interestingly, the actresses playing these characters are mother and daughter in real life, as reported by the Mirror.

Margaret Qualley, the youngest daughter of actress Andie MacDowell and former model Paul Qualley, has opened up about her ‘normal’ upbringing despite her mother’s Hollywood fame.

The pair met on a modelling job for Gap, were married in 1986 and had three children, including actress Rainey Qualley.

In an interview with The Evening Standard in 2023, Margaret described growing up in Asheville as “just normal” to her, despite acknowledging that it was “weird” for her mum to be living in such a small place as a famous actress. She also spoke candidly to Harper’s Bazaar about her mother’s career, admitting she didn’t love “the whole movie thing” as a child.

Meanwhile, her older sister Rainey is not only an actress, but also a singer under the pseudonym Rainsford, so it seems that stardom runs in the family.

Margaret Qualley has recently been in the headlines for allegedly being ‘overlooked’ by the Motion Picture Academy, as many believed her performance was deserving of a nomination.

Since the nominations were announced in January, film enthusiasts have been left puzzled as to why Margaret has been omitted from the Best Supporting Actress category, even though her co-star has been acknowledged.

Demi Moore, The Substance’s lead star, will be at the awards ceremony as a nominee for Best Actress. She will be competing against British actress Cynthia Erivo for her leading role as Elphaba in Wicked; Karla Sofia Gascon in Emilia Perez; Mikey Madison from Anora; and Fernanda Torres in I’m Still Here.

The ceremony is likely to fuel further speculation as the film has garnered five nominations in total, meaning the cast will be present.

The recognition of Demi Moore by the Oscars but not Qualley is particularly perplexing when considering the context of her role – Demi’s and Margaret’s characters are essentially two parts of a whole.

It’s also worth noting that when Moore won her Golden Globe, she acknowledged Qualley in her acceptance speech, stating the actress was “the other half of me that [she] couldn’t have done without”.
