Not only were Sheldon and Amy a great couple on The Big Bang Theory, but behind the scenes, Jim Parsons and Mayim Bialik grew very close to one another. So much so, that during season 4, Jim Parsons made sure that Mayim Bialik wasn’t going anywhere, going out of his way and talking to producers about keeping her in for the long-run.
Even when Parsons decided on his exit following season 12, he feared for Bialik’s future on the show in the event that The Big Bang Theory would continue on without him.
Ultimately, the two had a great run on-screen. However, things were made a little more complicated behind the scenes prior to an important scene in the show’s history. As we’ll reveal, Jim Parsons was under the weather during his iconic kiss with Mayim Bialik. However, Bialik had a wise tactic in order to avoid Parsons’ germs.
We’re going to take a look back at how it all unfolded behind the scenes.
Jim Parsons Was Feeling Ill During His Kissing Scene Alongside Mayim Bialik
It was one of the most iconic scenes in The Big Bang Theory’s history, Sheldon and Amy finally sharing their first kiss.
However, despite the spectacular moment for the series, it was a big struggle for Jim Parsons behind the scenes. The actor revealed he rarely got sick, but was battling an illness during this particular scene.
“I was sick with something, like a bad respiratory cold. And it was ironic because I always took care of myself, and here I am sick during one of the very rare times I have to kiss her. And kiss her several times because I knew we’d have to do several takes. I was like, This is unbelievable! I felt bad about it, I really did.”
Despite the stress involved for Parsons, he admitted that Bialik handled the moment with true class. Though he did catch something from the actress in-between scenes.
“Mayim is always very game and never one to worry about those things too much, although she did have some sort of thing that she was gargling every time we did a take.”
Bialik herself would admit that in order to avoid catching Parsons’ cold, she used peroxide in-between takes.

Mayim Bialik Used Peroxide In-Between Takes During Their Scene And Didn’t Get Sick
Mayim Bialik handled the scene with class. However, she did admit that due to multiple takes, the evening grew very long. Ultimately, she was pleased with the result, and it turned into one of the most iconic scenes of the show.
Wisely though, Bialik decided to bring peroxide and gargle it after every take.
She recalled, “The man was visibly sweating and feverish, so I rinsed with peroxide in between every kiss, every scene, every take, so that I wouldn’t get sick. It’s such a great scene, and it turned out so great, but it was a really hard night.”
To Bialik’s credit, not only was the scene a big success despite all the shoots, she also avoided getting sick because of her wise tactic.
“To think of all the work that went into it, I’m so glad it was so sweet. I really loved it. Oh, and I did not get sick.”
A memorable scene and one that clearly took a lot of work behind the scenes.

I had chills. I feel like I’m a viewer of the show too, so I was excited. I really wanted that to happen, too, for “Lenny,” for Leonard and Penny.”
