Meet Daniel Levy

Tottenham Hotspur’s current chairman, Daniel Levy, is an English businessman who was born on February 8th, 1962. He has been in this position since 2001, making him the Premier League chairman with the longest tenure.

Levy was born to Jewish parents in Essex, England. His father, Barry Levy, ran the apparel retailer Mr. Byrite, which was eventually renamed Blue Inc. He has been a lifelong fan of Tottenham Hotspur and went to his first game at White Hart Lane against QPR in the 1960s when he was seven or eight years old.

Education

Daniel Levy studied Economics and Land Economy at Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, and graduated in 1985 with a First Class Honours Degree.

Career

Levy worked in real estate development and his family’s business, Mr. Byrite, after receiving his degree. He entered the field of investment banking, engaged in private equity, and raised funds to make investments in numerous businesses. In 1995, he and Joe Lewis co-founded the investment trust ENIC International Ltd, where he later rose to the position of managing director. ENIC was transformed by Levy into a media, entertainment, and sports company. Lewis has 70.6% of the equity in ENIC while Levy and his family hold 29.4%.

ENIC purchased stock in six European teams, including a small portion of Tottenham Hotspur. Levy served as a director of Rangers 2004, a Scottish football team in which ENIC had a sizable ownership position.

AEK Athens, Slavia Prague, FC Basel, Vicenza, as well as non-football businesses like Warner Bros Restaurants and a Cambridge software firm, Autonomy, were also owned by ENIC. He acquired a sizable investment in Tottenham Hotspur, where he later rose to the position of chairman, but all of his other teams were eventually sold since UEFA regulations forbade clubs with the same owner from participating in the same competition.

Levy received the Football Business Awards’ CEO of the Year honor in November 2017.
