Most of us have met sugarbaby lifestyle coach, makeup guru, supermodel, travel influencer, professional S.T.E.M instructor (etcetera, etcetera) Mia Dio via social media – but what do we know about the satirist behind the character?
We sat down with the woman behind everyone’s favorite sugarbaby to hear her origin story and who inspired her character – plus, she reveals the hilarious reason she never thought her character would go viral.
Mia Opens Up About Her Origin Story
Mia Dio’s character may joke that she’s a S.T.E.M instructor (that would be, Sugarbaby Training Education in Money), but this content creator really is a whiz when it comes to academia.
In fact, she took (and aced) so many AP subjects that she ended up graduating from high school at just 16.
From there, she thought she’d go into law, and even worked at a law firm for a time.
So, just how did the aspiring lawyer end up creating in content, instead?
“I was basically an attorney’s b***h! And the money I was making made it not fun or cute – and definitely not material girl!”
With the newfound realization that law wasn’t for her after all, she quit working at the firm – but that meant she needed to make a plan to cover her costs, fast.
Enter, a new roommate – and the beginning of a whole new chapter.
Mia’s Roommate Became Her Inspiration
When Mia Dio met her now-ex-roommate, she was a little confused by the fact that, in lieu of contributing to rent, she’d pay her share in groceries and “Anything you can put on a credit card.”
“I was like, ‘Okay, interesting …'” Mia recalls.
That interest only intensified when she noticed her roommate would come home with heaps of designer goods – like Chanel bags (“And a Birkin, one time”) that cost well above what rent would have been.
“I started asking her about where it was coming from, and after trying to dodge it for a while, she confessed. She was a sugarbaby.”
Mia laughs that, once she learned the truth, she was desperate to become her roommate’s assistant, “So we could spend our days doing hot girl things!”
However, while that never came to fruition, she ended up getting a career kickstart thanks to her roommate, anyway.
That came in the form of inspiration.

“We couldn’t communicate much, because she had come straight from Russia – sometimes, we even used Google Translate to talk – but she would pick up on my boy problems and try give me advice. The advice would always jump to the absolute, aggressive end of the extreme, and I thought it was so hilarious.”
That said, she only channeled that inspiration into content a while later.
Mia Recounts The Moment She Created Her Now-Iconic Character
Fast-forward to lockdown, Mia and her roommate had parted ways.
Her roommate had moved in with her sugardaddy-turned-fiancé, and desperate to flea apartment living, Mia moved in with her boyfriend at the time – at his parents’ palatial estate.
“I ended up laughing, because I was like, she has a much older sugar daddy, and my then-boyfriend was 10 years older than me and came from a much wealthier background. I started joking around, pretending to be my roommate.”
Eventually, around November 2020, she decided to share the joke with her friends and family.
“I filmed myself running around this beautiful house, doing 45 seconds to a minute of outrageous one-liners,” she chuckles.
However, she laughs that when she posted it to TikTok, she never anticipated that it would go viral.
In fact, she never thought anyone outside of her inner circle would see it.
“I posted the video on what I presumed was ‘friends-only,’ and I went to sleep. The next morning, friends of mine told me it was at a million views – and from there, it grew until, like, 23 million!”
Mia Recalls The Moment She Ran Into Her Roommate
Since posting her first sugarbaby video, Mia Dio’s following has only continued to grow – but we we’re dying to know: what did her former roommate think?
“I actually ran into her at Carbone!” she laughs.
“She was there with her sugardaddy – now her husband, and they were so in love – his friend, and another young, attractive woman. I was like, she made a sugarbaby double date happen!”
“She had a pomeranian in her purse – I now have one, too – and I told her the character was based on her,” Mia continues.
“She told me that she wasn’t sure if it was based on her, or if I’d started hanging out with a lot more Russian sugarbabies because I missed her!”
Either way, she was a fan – and as anyone who has spent hours on end binging Mia’s content, it’s certainly not hard to see why!
