No one saw it coming. In October of 2023, Matthew Perry was found dead of an apparent drowning at his L.A. home. However, in the days and weeks that followed, it became clear that the former Friends star, 54, had secretly relapsed, with an autopsy determining that he passed away from “acute effects of ketamine.”
Five people have since been charged in connection with Matthew’s death, including two doctors and his live-in assistant, Kenneth Iwamasa, who pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute ketamine causing death.
A new documentary from Peacock, Matthew Perry: A Hollywood Tragedy, looks back on the actor’s rise to fame and sad final days, plus the investigation into his untimely demise, with Tinseltown insiders providing fresh insights.
“They really preyed on somebody vulnerable,” says one interviewee. “He was doing so well. Everyone thought he was clean and sober.”
Morgan Fairchild, who played Matthew’s mom on the NBC sitcom, appears in the hour-long special, as does Martin Estrada, the U.S. attorney in charge of his case. “The allegations show a trained doctor is injecting Mr. Perry in parking lots,” he revealed in the documentary’s trailer. “We used to blame the victim. We don’t do that anymore.”
