Outlander actress Caitríona Balfe has revealed her next big career move after the Starz series and recent appearance in the movie The Amateur.

Taking to Instagram, she confirmed she will be starring in the upcoming Sense and Sensibility film, based on Jane Austen’s 1811 novel of the same name.

She posted a screenshot from the Deadline article confirming the new Sense and Sensibility casting update and wrote: “I am so thrilled to be joining this excellent cast for this exciting project. 

“In the 250 year anniversary of Austen’s birth, with the visionary Georgia Oakley at the helm, a new Sense and Sensibility for a new generation. 

“So proud to be Mother to these amazing young women @focusfeatures @workingtitlefilms @daisyedgarjones #EsmeCreedMiles @george__mackay @_frank_dillane_ #FionaShaw @herbertnordrum #georgiaoakley.”

The Claire Fraser star, 45, will portray Mrs Dashwood, mother to the central sisters Marianne and Elinor Dashwood, played by Hanna’s Esmé Creed-Miles and Normal People’s Daisy Edgar-Jones respectively.

The update announced six new additions to the upcoming film, which also included Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince’s Frank Dillane as the villainous John Willoughby, Killing Eve’s Fiona Shaw as Mrs Jennings, 1917’s George MacKay as Edward Ferrars, Herbert Nordrum of Promising Young Woman fame as Colonel Brandon, newcomer Bodhi Rae Breathnach as the youngest sibling Margaret Dashwood, and, of course, Balfe.

Production on Sense and Sensibility has started in the UK, with BAFTA Award nominee Georgia Oakley serving as director, while best-selling author Diana Reid is adapting the screenplay. 

Many of Balfe’s Outlander co-stars rushed to congratulate her in the comments section under the post.

Karen Pirie and Outlander’s Marsali Fraser actress Lauren Lyle posted: “The QUEEEEEN! [sic].”

Sophie Skelton, who plays Balfe’s onscreen Outlander daughter Brianna MacKenzie, wrote: “Here she comes.”

Tim Downie, who plays Governor Tryon, said: “This is fantastic!”

Jamie Fraser star Sam Heughan wrote: “Ooooh mr Pickering!! [sic].” The comment was possibly a reference to illustrator Ferdinand Pickering, who was the first to illustrate Austen’s novels. 

Rachel Hunter star Izzy Meikle-Small and Lizzie Wemyss star Caitlin O’Ryan posted their congratulations as well.

The official Outlander Instagram account also playfully added: “We know her! We know her! Congratulations @caitrionabalfe!”

The new film marks the latest big screen adaptation of Austen’s beloved classic after Emma Thompson’s Oscar-winning adaptation back in 1995.

The BBC also made a 2008 mini-series starring Janet McTeer, Hattie Morahan, Charity Wakefield, Dan Stevens, David Morrissey, and Dominic Cooper.

Sense and Sensibility follows the Dashwood sisters as they attempt to form prudent matches after the family finds itself in financial dire straits. 

Mrs Dashwood attempts to shepherd her daughters through their change in circumstances, with Elinor and Marianne have differing temperaments when it comes to love.
