Penn Badgley and his wife, Domino Kirke, faced a challenging period in their marriage after experiencing two heartbreaking miscarriages.
The star of “You” opens up about these difficult experiences in his newly released book of essays, titled “Crushmore: Essays on Love, Loss, and Coming-of-Age.”
In the book, Penn reveals, “This was our second loss together. It felt as if the cycle would never end,” adding that the couple nearly parted ways, a common occurrence for many couples dealing with such grief.
He further explained that their near separation was fueled by a sense of “isolation” as they navigated their grief in a society that often remains silent on these issues, offering little support to those who are suffering.
Badgley, 39, reflected on the haunting memory, “Seeing our still baby in that surreal black-and-white sonogram imagery is a painful memory that lingers each time we go for a scan now.”
He reiterated the need for openness and talking more about miscarriages on the “Totally Booked” podcast on Sunday.
“That sort of loss is really common, and we should — I don’t know if talking about it alone is what we need,” he said. “We at least need to start by talking about it more … They do happen all the time, and they can be really, really painful. Well, I would say they universally are painful. Maybe not everybody’s fully allowed to feel that way.”
Though it’s unclear when the miscarriages occurred, the actor and Kirke, 41, are parents to son James, whom they welcomed in August 2020.
Additionally, Kirke gave birth to twin sons in September
When Kirke announced she was pregnant in February, she admitted to being “stunned” via an Instagram announcement.
“Spontaneous twins are beyond magical,” she wrote at the time.
Kirke is also the mother to a son named Cassius from a previous relationship.
“It’s funny because I wrote this before the twins were born, and now I feel like I am — and I mean this with love — but I feel like I’m drowning in children,” Badgley said on the podcast.
“So, it’s harder to get in touch with that feeling of loss because my cup truly runneth over.”
The “Gossip Girl” alum shared that he was grateful that he and Kirke didn’t give in to the “gravity” of separating.
Kirke and Badgley started dating in 2014 and tied the knot in February 2017 at a New York courthouse.
They exchanged vows once again that June.
