Penn Badgley has revealed he was born two months prematurely, causing his heart and lungs to ‘stop repeatedly’ on a daily basis in an emotional new interview.
The You actor, 36, said his mother had to resuscitate him daily and that he believes this trauma has affected him physically and mentally throughout his life.
Speaking on the HypocondriActor podcast, he said: ‘The first couple of weeks I was in a NICU [neonatal intensive care unit] because my heart and lungs would stop repeatedly throughout the day.’

Doctors would resuscitate him in the hospital but his health issues continued to affect him when he was well enough to be sent home,
He said: ‘[My mom had to resuscitate me] multiple times a day because my heart and lungs would stop, and I was on a monitor that would just beep very loudly. The first time she had to do it was on the way home from the hospital when I was released from the NICU.
The Gossip Girl star said human touch was enough to bring him back, saying: ‘Just human touch would wake me up.’
‘The effect that it’s had on me at least in a sort of emotional way is that I’m extremely sensitive to touch, I’ve just noticed that in my life. Anytime anybody touches me, I’m just very aware of it.

He added that his health improved and his condition ‘faded away’ over the years – but becoming a father to a son, James, now two, with wife Domino Kirke, 40, has caused him to reflect on how his ill-health affected him.
He said: ‘If my son, who I now know so well, was the first year of his life flatlining multiple times a day, the idea that that wouldn’t influence him is ridiculous.
‘Thinking of my toddler now, I’m realizing it actually did affect me. It affected my sense of what life is like, what life is not like.’

Following his move to London, and new life as Professor Jonathan Moore, Joe battles a fresh heartbreak, which he ominously calls the ‘catalyst for a new path.’
In September, Joe said he was ‘not the lovable bookstore manager in New York’ ‘or the doting husband in the suburbs’ in a new preview.
‘I’ve gone through a bit of refinement upon crossing the pond,’ he insisted while sipping from a teacup. ‘And living in London has allowed me to bury the past if you will.’
‘Gone are the days of unrequited love and longing,’ he says as Marienne, who successfully escaped his death grip in the past, appears onscreen.
He promises the audience that he’s focused on his work as a professor though a frame shows him creepily standing over a the shoulder of a new character named Kate (Amy-Leigh Hickman).
More new characters pop onscreen including his colleague Rhys (Ed Speleers), who appears to be a professor as well, and Nadia (Charlotte Ritchie).

Part one of the season will come out on February 10, 2023, while the season’s second part will be released one month later on March 10.
