Prince William has a warning for anyone who hangs around Robert Irwin: Stay sharp.

The Prince of Wales, 43, left a hilarious message for Irwin, 21, and radio host Scott Mills during the Tuesday, June 24, episode of Mills’ BBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show.

“Good morning, Scott, or should I say G’day, Scott? I know you’ve got the fantastic Robert Irwin on the show this morning, [a] brilliant ambassador for the Earthshot prize,” William said, referencing the environmental award given to five winners each year. “Sorry I can’t be with you both this morning, hoping to catch up with you soon.”

William continued, “You’re very much invited to the Earthshot prize in Rio in Brazil in November. It’s going to be a fantastic event, great show.”

The British royal then issued a warning to Mills, 51.

“Just beware, Scott, that Robert likes to pull random terrifying animals and creatures out of his pockets while he’s on anyone’s show and talking to them,” he said. “So, just watch your back at all times that a tarantula or something doesn’t suddenly pop onto your desk.”

Earlier on the radio show, Irwin, who is the son of late wildlife educator Steve Irwin, told listeners fun facts about animals and discussed his role as an ambassador for the Earthshot prize.

Irwin announced his role as an ambassador in September 2024.

“My entire life has been centered around conservation and continuing an important legacy that my dad and my family started, and it’s given me a real deep appreciation for the need to repair and restore our ecosystems,” he said. “The Earthshot prize does such a great job at not only creating that really broad, large-scale societal and environmental change, but it also supports the on-the-ground initiatives, the cutting-edge technology, the most passionate individuals and organizations.”

Irwin continued, “Being an Earthshot prize ambassador means I’ll get to take you guys along on the journey as we find out what some of the Earthshot finalists are doing and really showcasing the hope that we have for the future.”

Irwin previously joined William for the Earthshot Awards in Cape Town, South Africa, in November 2024. One year prior, the young conservationist gave William, who is the founder of the Earthshot prize, a sweet shoutout, calling him “a real beacon to everyone in the conservation field” in an interview with People.

“It’s hard to put into words just how massive Earthshot is for wildlife conservation, for climate action, for the world. For Prince William, who has such a great platform, to lend his voice, his resources into creating positive change is such a refreshing, wonderful thing to see. I applaud what he is doing,” Irwin said.

Irwin also gushed about working with William in an exclusive interview with Us Weekly ahead of the Steve Irwin Gala in May.

“I think Prince William has been such an amazing person to work with, and there is such an incredible synergy between what he does and who he is and who we are,” he said. “It’s all about conservation.
