Project Runway Season 21: Who Did The Designers Vote Out Of The Competition?
Share and Follow

There was a major Project Runway first in the most recent episode of the Hulu reality TV show. It’s taken 21 seasons for this twist to finally come—this week, the designers had to debate among themselves who they’d be sending home.

Though the judges chose the three bottom designers, the ultimate elimination was in the contestants’ hands. The decision was between Antonio, Joseph McRae, and Miss Joan—so who was it who had to pack up their work station for good?

Joseph McRae Was Eliminated By His Fellow Contestants

Viewers saw that there was much debate between the designers about whom to send home. One designer, Jesus, was adamant that he would not let his twin brother, Antonio, leave the competition. Another contestant, Madeline, vouched for her friend, Joseph McRae, saying she didn’t want to see the person she felt closest to go home.

In the end, however, Madeline wasn’t able to sway the other designers, and four out of the six of them voted to send Joseph home. As Christian read out the designers’ votes, Joseph learned he’d received the majority and was officially out of the competition. On Joseph’s way out, Christian gave him some words of encouragement, telling him that he believed in his talent and that he had a long career ahead of him.

Joseph assured Christian and the others that it wasn’t the last they’d see of him. Now that he’s exited the competition, it’s down to just eight designers moving forward. With the Estrada twins both still in the competition (and often working as a team, much to the other designers’ annoyance), it’s anyone’s guess who will be the victor of the season.

Miss Joan Is Embracing Her Second Chance

One of the designers who narrowly escaped going home was Miss Joan, the eldest contestant of the bunch. To the cameras, she opened up about how she was originally cast for the 2020, but she’d had to drop out when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She’d fought hard, and now, a few years later, she was feeling well enough to rejoin the competition in Season 21.

Miss Joan explained that her health scare had made the show all the more meaningful to her:

This is more than just a competition to me. This is a full-circle moment. To win Project Runway would be such a validation. I wanna show that I can be an inspiration to so many women out there. That there is life after, you know, being diagnosed.

Thankfully, this time around, the judges loved her look for the episode. The task was to create a high-fashion look inspired by last week’s unconventional materials challenge, and Miss Joan embraced her tailoring expertise to create a modern woman’s suit to complement her popsicle stick cocktail dress from last week.

This week’s episode ended with another intense standoff between the contestants and the judges. Belania got some heat for growing defensive over her look, upset that she’d had to alter it for a different model at the last second. Meanwhile, Antonio once again found himself in the bottom, this time for a skimpy look that featured a pair of sheer pants and a G-string. Judge Nina Garcia went head-to-head with Heidi Klum, saying she loathed the look.

Nina was so passionate about her distaste for the look that she didn’t hold back when talking to Antonio:

I don’t know how you’ve made it this far.

The episode ended before we could see which designer was eliminated, and viewers will have to tune into Hulu next Tuesday to find out who the next designer to leave the competition will be.
