The Great British Baking Show has long been a sanctuary for fans of reality television, offering a serene escape in the form of a quaint baking competition set amidst the picturesque English countryside. Each episode invites viewers into a world where amateur bakers, honing their skills, tackle a series of challenges, all vying for the coveted title of star baker.
A key element of the Netflix series has always been its judging duo, Prue Leith and Paul Hollywood. Their dynamic blend of contrasting personalities and playful repartee has endeared them to audiences around the globe. However, fans were recently met with bittersweet news as Prue announced her departure from the show.
In a heartfelt message shared on her Instagram, Prue revealed her decision to step away from her judging duties after completing Season 16. The announcement, made just last week, marked the end of an era for the beloved series, leaving viewers to reflect on the joy and warmth she brought to the tent.
Prue Is Quitting Judging After Nine Seasons
Prue made the heartbreaking announcement just this past week, taking to her personal Instagram account to share the update with her followers. She explained that she’d made the difficult decision to take a step back from judging the show after last year’s Season 16:
After nine series and judging more than 400 challenges, I have decided to step down as a judge on The Great British Bake Off. Bake Off has been a fabulous part of my life for the last nine years, I have genuinely loved it and I’m sure I’ll miss working with my fellow judge Paul, Alison and Noel and the teams at Love Productions and Channel 4.
While the news was devastating to many longtime viewers, Prue pointed out that she felt it was the right time for her to step away from the show. Her signature humor came through in her remarks. “I’m 86 for goodness sake!” she joked.
As for what’s next, Prue didn’t mention any specific plans, though she did note that she was looking forward to being able to spend more time gardening.
Her Replacement Isn’t Confirmed Yet
As for future seasons of The Great British Baking Show, those behind the series have yet to announce who will be stepping into Prue’s place. This isn’t the first time there’s been turnover on the show—longtime viewers will know that the hosts, usually a comedy duo, have changed several times over the course of the season. The latest pairing is Noel Fielding and Alison Hammond, who have been with the series since 2017 and 2023, respectively.
There’s no doubt that the rest of the cast will miss Prue once she leaves. On the show’s official Instagram account, their own version of the announcement shared the news and wished Prue well on her next chapter:
Our wonderful Prue has decided to step away from judging Bake Off. From joyful judging to colourful fits to accidental innuendoes, you are simply the best and will be so missed. Please join us in wishing Prue the very best and thanking her for nine brilliant years in the Tent ❤️
Her co-judge, Paul Hollywood, also wrote his own note of gratitude about Prue. “It’s been incredible working with you Prue, you are magnificent and we have had such a laugh, I will see you soon …. I’ll cook ❤️” he shared. The production company behind the series, Love Production, even shared their own sentimental message.
“Huge thanks to Prue who has been a brilliant judge on Bake Off and a much loved presence in the tent for nearly a decade,” it said. “From her genuine expertise and encouragement of the bakers to her ability to drop innocent innuendos that reduce the entire tent (and the audience at home) to tears of laughter, Prue will always have a piece of Bake Off’s heart.”
