Prue Leith, the beloved figure from Great British Bake Off, recently experienced a major health scare at the age of 86. While vacationing in the picturesque landscapes of Yorkshire, Leith suddenly struggled to articulate her thoughts into coherent sentences, prompting concerns of a possible stroke. Her husband, John Playfair, became alarmed as her speech devolved into a perplexing array of disordered words, prompting him to dial emergency services. Leith was swiftly transported to the hospital via a blue light ambulance, where she underwent a thorough evaluation for ten hours.
The well-known culinary expert later divulged details about the unnerving episode, which her husband initially suspected might be a stroke. She recounted, “A few weeks back, while staying in Yorkshire, I experienced a migraine attack,” she assured her concerned fans. Describing the typical progression of her condition, she noted, “Initially, my vision halves, and then my sight is consumed by a luminous ring of flickering, colorful lights, predominantly in the upper right of my visual field.”
In her monthly missive, “Prue’s News,” featured in the September edition of The Oldie magazine—available this Friday—she provided more insight. She elaborated, “If I fail to promptly take one of my migraine-relieving pills—comprised of paracetamol, ibuprofen, and sumatriptan—a severe headache inevitably ensues.”
Leith confessed that her string of muddled words had understandably sparked her husband’s fear of the worst-case scenario.
Although she attempted to convey to him that a migraine was the true culprit, the words simply would not form, leaving her unable to communicate effectively at the moment.
As a result she was rushed to hospital where she spent 10 hours in A&E but she had nothing but praise for the NHS staff who treated her.
She revealed they sent her for a brain scan “to be sure” acknowledging: “…Since the speech problem is a classic symptom of a stroke, and my extreme old age being a time when mini-strokes are common, everyone was determined to be safe not sorry.”
The staff even went out of their way to feed her when she confessed she was hungry after eight hours in the deaprtment.
Prue said a nursing assistant managed to find her a sandwich of “white bread with a skinny slice of processed ham”.
“Not the healthiest supper for nurses on night shift, but John and I wolfed it down,” she shared.
