If you’re working with Quentin Tarantino, then you’d better bring your A-game. Tarantino is not always easy to work with, but he’s had a great track record at the box office. He has yet to get film number 10 underway, but once he does, everyone will want to hop on board.
For Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Tarantino got a ton of stars, including Emile Hirsch.
The actor opened up about the experience, which included some brutal honesty from the director. We have all the details on this below!
‘Once Upon A Time In Hollywood’ Was A Star-Studded Affair
2019’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood marked the 9th film directed by Quentin Tarantino, and there was a considerable amount of hype surrounding the film. Not only was the subject matter fascinating, but the cast alone was more than enough to sell tickets.
Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, and Margot Robbie, the film had a ton of star power. It garnered some solid reviews from critics, and when the dust settled from the film’s global box office run, it managed to rake in over $370 million. No, that’s not an Avengers-level haul, but we’re sure the studio was more than happy with what the film made.
Lead talent aside, the film’s secondary performers were immensely talented, as well. Those names also included none other than Emile Hirsch.
It Was A Dream For Emile Hirsch To Work Alongside Quentin Tarantino
Prior to landing his role in Tarantino’s love letter to Hollywood, Emile Hirsch had already put together one heck of a career, which even featured plenty of critical acclaim.
Hirsch had appeared in projects like Alpha Dog, Into the Wild, Milk, Lone Survivor, and plenty more before he got the chance to play Jay Sebring in Tarantino’s film.
When speaking on Michael Rosenbaum’s podcast, Inside of You, Hirsch was asked about working with Tarantino, and the actor expressed that he was a huge fan of the director.
“I was such like, a following devoted fan of his forever, that I’m just, I was just like, it was like having a cult leader around or something. I was just like, you know, I don’t know. It’s like I grew up watching his movies so much that, you know, it’s like, I just can’t. I tried to treat him, like, regular, or just be calm around him, but I just, I couldn’t. Other people, I think could, but I couldn’t do it,” he said.

From that point, Hirsch would make a major reveal that listeners found surprising.
The Direction That Quentin Tarantino Gave Emile Hirsch
When asked about the kind of direction that Tarantino gave, Hirsch was brutally honest with Rosenbaum.
“Yeah, I mean, early on, I remember that we did a read through, and I was kind of playing Jay Sebring more as like what I would see in like, little video clips of him. And he called me afterwards, and he was like, you know, he basically told me that I was on the wrong path,” Hirsch revealed.
That had to have been hard for the actor to hear, especially considering that he held Tarantino in such high esteem.
Fortunately, Hirsch was able to be a professional about it all, and he took Tarantino’s notes and applied them, turning in a great performance in the process.
This story from Hirsch is hardly the first time that an actor has opened up about Tarantino being brutally honest with his direction.
Jamie Foxx dished on working with Tarantino in an interview, and he shed some light on how tough the director can be.
“On the first day of rehearsal, I’m reading my lines lie [hums] and he said cut and closed the door and was like ‘umm, what the f— was that?’ I said ‘what do you mean?’ He said ‘I knew I was gonna have this problem. Listen, all of this shit – you have to be a ——- slave. He’s a slave. He’s not cool, he’s a ——- slave. He doesn’t know how to read. You come in with your Louis [Vuitton] bag and your Range Rover and you’re just like ‘I’m so cool’. Well, you’re not Jim Brown, he’s a slave and then he becomes the hero. But lose that shit first,'” Foxx revealed.
Thanks to Tarantino’s direction, Emile Hirsch was able to turn things around and do a solid job in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
