Karen Huger has been going through a difficult few months. After her infamous DUI arrest in March 2024, she’s been dealing with a court case, and she’s finally received her sentence. According to FOX 5, the Real Housewives of Potomac star will be facing a year in prison.
The reality TV star has a long road ahead of her, but according to reports from the trial, she’s been working on making amends and taking accountability for what happened, even if the sentence was harsh for her.
Karen Huger’s Prison Sentence
Although she and her team probably expected this verdict, it was a tough blow for Karen. According to a FOX 5 reporter, the judge stated that she was “filled to the gills with alcohol.” She was sentenced to two years with one suspended, which means that, as of now, she will be spending 12 months in prison.
Karen reportedly called the incident a “wake-up call” and said that she would be attending AA meetings for the rest of her life.
Back in December 2024, she was found guilty on almost all counts, and her rep had maintained that they would fight the decision through an appeal.
“Although we are disappointed in the jury’s verdict, we of course respect their decision and appreciate their time hearing our case,” Karen’s attorney shared in a statement to PEOPLE.
“We continue to reserve Mrs. Huger’s right to an appeal and intend to fully pursue justice on her behalf. We appreciate your support and prayers for Mrs. Huger and her family at this time.”
Karen’s Reaction Following Her DUI
In March 2024, immediately following her DUI, Karen Huger shared a statement sharing her point of view of what happened.
She took accountability, but she also explained the emotional turmoil that she was going through on the day of the accident.
“Thank you all for your prayers and well wishes during this very frightening experience,” she said in a statement to TMZ. “I am still in shock from last night’s incident, but grateful to be alive today.”
“With the passing of my beloved mother, grief comes and goes in waves, and with Mother’s Day approaching it has felt more like a tsunami.”
Karen also shared the specifics of the accident and why things ended so horribly.
“I was crying on my way home and saw a car heading right for me. I swerved to avoid the head-on collision, hit the divider and then a tree.”
“I’m hurt, bruised up a bit, but so grateful I am alive! I did receive citations, one of which was unrelated to the incident which is understandable, but what was most surprising is that the car that almost hit me just drove away.”
She reportedly has sent thoughtful letters to the officers involved in the accident, apologizing and thanking them for their service, so even though things ended badly for her, it’s good to see that this wake-up call, as she called it, is helping her make amends.
