In the latest episode of Royally Us, royal expert Russel Myers delves into the potential evolution of the monarchy in the aftermath of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor’s recent legal troubles.
“Discussions about streamlining the monarchy have been around for quite a while. If you had asked King Charles a decade ago, he envisioned a central role for Prince Harry,” Myers, the author of William and Catherine: The Monarchy’s New Era: The Inside Story, shared with Us Weekly. “Harry and Meghan Markle were expected to be prominent figures, bolstered by support from the former Duke of York before this scandalous episode. The royal family may seem a bit understaffed now, but the king’s aim appears to be about enhancing accountability within the monarchy.”
Andrew, now 66, was apprehended over allegations of illicit behavior during his tenure in public office. The Thames Valley police informed the BBC of their investigation into accusations that Andrew shared sensitive information with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein while acting as a U.K. trade envoy.

In October 2025, Charles, then 77, stripped Andrew of his remaining royal titles and expelled him from Royal Lodge. He subsequently relocated to temporary quarters at Sandringham in January. Insiders and royal analysts have conveyed to Us Weekly that the reputations of Andrew and Sarah Ferguson have suffered irreparable damage due to their association with Epstein, suggesting that a return to royal duties is unlikely.
With Andrew out of the picture, the monarchy will make even more adjustments in the future one Prince William becomes king.
“Speaking to people very, very close to William and Kate [Middleton], they have a totally different vision for the monarchy. It needs to be accountable, it needs to speak to the younger generation, not only at home, but abroad,” Myers tells Us. “It also needs to create a system that works for the people and certainly what they have tried to do is get their family home life right and then work on the public profile and that’s very, very different to how the Monarch has been structured in generations beforehand.”
