Russell Brand ‘shaken and quiet’ in custody amid ‘real danger’

Further details have emerged about Russell Brand’s first day and night in custody after he was convicted of one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault.

Brand is due to be sentenced on Monday, November 9. The prison where he will serve his sentence has not yet been decided, with that decision resting with the UK Prison Service. However, sources claim he is being held temporarily at Wandsworth Prison ahead of his sentencing hearing.

Sources previously said Brand was “petrified” about spending his first night behind bars and was being “watched around the clock”. New reports suggest he appeared “shaken and quiet” during his first day in prison and has been kept apart from the wider inmate population because of concerns for his safety.

Russell Brand has reportedly been described as “shaken and quiet” in the early days of his imprisonment, with sources claiming he is considered to be “in real danger”.

A source told The Sun: “Brand’s first day in jail was a real shock to his system and a wake-up call. He looked shaken and was quiet. A horrible, noisy and dirty jail like Wandsworth is a world away from his glamorous Hollywood lifestyle.

“Brand has been placed in a cell and is being kept away from other inmates because he is in real danger due to the nature of his offences, his wealth and who he is.

“Some officers and prisoners will be excited to have a celebrity inside. But many inmates may want to harm him, so he will not be allowed to mix with the wider population at Wandsworth. It will be safer for him, and officials will want to move him elsewhere as soon as possible. He is likely to find the prison food unpleasant and may have to supplement it by buying additional items.”

Brand could receive a lengthy prison sentence after being convicted at Southwark Crown Court on Thursday of raping one woman and sexually assaulting three others. Jurors unanimously found him guilty of offences committed against four women between 2004 and 2009.

Mr Justice Bennathan warned Brand that he faced a “significant custodial sentence” before remanding him in custody. The judge also refused to allow him to say goodbye to his children, citing concerns that he might flee rather than return to court for sentencing on Monday. Brand responded loudly: “Yes, My Lord.”

He was convicted of raping a 21-year-old woman he met after performing at the Hammersmith Apollo in 2009. Brand was also found guilty of sexually assaulting an MTV employee at a Soho bar, a woman at the Choice FM studios and a Channel 4 worker who had been told to give him a massage.

Brand faced seven charges in total, including three counts of rape, three counts of sexual assault and one count of attempted indecent assault. He was cleared of raping a woman at a Bournemouth hotel in 1999, during the Labour Party conference, where he had been performing in a cabaret show.

The former comedian was also acquitted of attempting to indecently assault a woman in central London in 2001. He had been accused of grabbing her arm and pulling her towards a toilet. He was further cleared of orally raping a woman in a London bar toilet during a birthday gathering the pair attended in Soho.

Speaking to Times Radio, the Prime Minister described Brand’s alleged actions as “horrifying”. He also praised “the bravery of the women, the victims in the case, who’ve come forward and had the courage to speak out”.

Brand will be sentenced on Monday after being convicted of one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault.
