Comparing images from 2018 to 2024, there is a discernible difference in Gosling’s cheeks, which appear fuller in the latter. This alteration has sparked speculation about possible fillers, with some observers noting his cheeks now seem to encroach on his eye area, diminishing their size. The once angular definition of his face has softened, coincidentally around the time he began work on the “Barbie” movie. Such changes inevitably lead to public speculation.
Despite the chatter, Gosling has remained silent on whether he has undergone any cosmetic enhancements. Nonetheless, the public’s reaction has been mixed, with some expressing dismay that someone as naturally handsome as Gosling might feel compelled to alter his appearance. “It’s unsettling to see a familiar face suddenly appear odd and artificial,” remarked a user on social media platform X in 2024. The pressures of aging under public scrutiny create a challenging paradox for stars like Gosling.

Throughout his career, Gosling’s looks have been both a blessing and a burden. While they have contributed significantly to his fame, he has often expressed discomfort with his heartthrob image. Emily Blunt, who worked with Gosling on “The Fall Guy,” told GQ in 2023 that he seemed embarrassed by this label, suggesting it didn’t align with his self-perception. Yet, the actor has also faced criticism from those who felt he didn’t fit certain roles.
When Gosling was cast as Ken in the “Barbie” movie, it sparked a backlash, with the hashtag “Not My Ken” trending on social media. Typically averse to controversy, Gosling addressed the uproar with humor and insight. “If people don’t want to play with my Ken, there are many other Kens to play with,” he quipped in a GQ interview. He further suggested that the backlash highlighted a deeper theme of the film, pointing out that those who claimed to care about Ken never truly did, thus revealing their hypocrisy.

There’s no denying that Ryan Gosling’s looks, for better or worse, defined a good part of his career. But he often struggled with the heartthrob status. “I think it embarrasses him in some ways because it’s not what he feels. I got the sense it wasn’t really what he felt about himself,” Emily Blunt, his co-star in “The Fall Guy,” told GQ in 2023. At the same time, he also found himself on the other side of that spectrum.
When it was announced Gosling would play Ken in the “Barbie” movie, many fans took issues with the casting. The hashtag “Not My Ken” even went viral on social media. While Gosling generally tends to stay away from controversy, he spoke out this time. “If people don’t want to play with my Ken, there are many other Kens to play with,” he joked in the GQ profile. He also argued that people’s reaction helped drive home one of the film’s underlying themes. “If you ever really cared about Ken, you would know that nobody cared about Ken. So your hypocrisy is exposed,” he said.
Gosling previously discussed being comfortable with aging, pointing out that he viewed it as a privilege. “With age, your perspectives shift … I don’t see any problem with getting older, quite the opposite! Aging helps you to become humble and that’s a great feeling,” he told German magazine Neon in 2015 (via Daily Mail). Of course, he was in his 30s back then. Seeing the aging signs on one’s face is a different story, especially in the spotlight.
