Nigel John Dermot “Sam” Neill, renowned for his unforgettable performances in blockbuster films like “Jurassic Park” and “Thor,” as well as acclaimed TV series such as “Peaky Blinders” and “The Tudors,” has passed away at the age of 78. This heartbreaking news was confirmed through a family statement on Instagram, revealing that Sam’s death was both “sudden and unexpected.” They lovingly recounted that Sam left the world surrounded by his family, embodying the dignity that marked his life, and promised to share additional details in due course.
In 2023, Neill courageously opened up about his battle with stage three angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma, a rare blood cancer. While promoting “Jurassic World Dominion,” he encountered swollen glands, which led to the diagnosis. In interviews with The Guardian, Neill disclosed how he approached the illness with resilience, opting for a novel chemotherapy treatment, with full awareness of the possibility that it might eventually become ineffective. In conversations with Australian Story, he expressed a fearless attitude toward dying, focusing instead on his reluctance to retire. “I love acting,” he revealed in an Independent interview, emphasizing the importance of staying active in his craft and his aversion to the notion of retirement.
Even in the face of his illness, Neill continued to throw himself into work. Among his final projects was a series adaptation of Liane Moriarty’s novel “Apples Never Fall,” where he starred alongside Annette Bening, Alison Brie, and Jake Lacy. He also returned for a new season of the engaging Australian miniseries “The Twelve.”

Sam Neill’s dedication to his art persisted right up until the end, as he took on new roles with vigor and passion despite the challenges posed by his health. His desire to keep acting was fueled by a longing to add more achievements to his impressive career. In March 2024, he told Decider, “I still want to put more runs on the board,” illustrating his determination to continue refining his craft. He remained humble, conceding that while he might not be getting any better, the experience he gained over the years had improved his performances.
When Neill first disclosed his diagnosis, he celebrated his life with profound appreciation. “I am full of gratitude looking back on this life,” he said in an Instagram video, adding that fans need not fuss with his health condition. “Let’s not worry too much about ‘all that.'” And while he takes pride in what he’s achieved over the course of his decades-long career, he told The Guardian that he’s made peace with just having a “strong sense of being this little speck in the universe, of so little significance… but a unique speck.”
Sam Neill leaves behind a loving family, including his four children and eight grandchildren, who will carry on his legacy.
