Sam Smith claims fans are convinced they are Adele

Sam Smith has spoken about the craziest rumour, that they are secretly the actual singer Adele, but in drag. 

The singer, 30, told Drew Barrymore on Monday that the conspiracy theory emerged because they and Adele, 34, have never been seen in the same room.

And moreover, non-binary singer Sam, who uses the pronouns ‘they/them’ said that if you slow Adele’s voice down, it does actually sound like theirs.

Sam said: ‘Everyone thinks I’m Adele. We’ve never been seen in the same room together. If you slow down her voice, it sounds a bit like mine.’

The English singer-songwriter performed in December at a White House ceremony as President Joe Biden signed the Respect For Marriage Act into law.

‘You sang Stay With Me, which I love, but you changed some of the lyrics?,’ Jimmy said.

‘Yeah, I did,’ confirmed Sam, who accessorized with dangling earrings and a necklace.

‘What lyrics did you change?,’ Jimmy asked.

‘It’s a lonely song about one night stands, so I decided…,’ Sam said as the studio audience erupted into laughter.

‘Is it?,’ Jimmy said.

‘Yeah, it is. It’s pretty depressing,’ Sam said.

‘I always sing it happy,’ Jimmy said.

‘But I changed it to, like, be a love song. And it was really beautiful. And there’s certain lyrics I’m going to keep forever,’ Sam said

Sam gushed about meeting Biden, 80, and Vice President Kamala Harris, 58, as Jimmy showed a photo of the non-binary singer posing with the politicians.

‘He’s fabulous. They’re all great. Kamala loved my handbag, which I was very happy with,’ Sam said. ‘They were all very sweet and kind to me and everyone, my band, loved them. It was a beautiful day.’

Sam was on the NBC talk show ahead of their appearance as a musical guest on Saturday Night Live.

The London native’s fourth studio album Gloria will be released on January 27.
