Sarah Ferguson Reportedly Wants a Fresh Start in the UK

A royal comeback is unfolding. Months after Sarah Ferguson left the United Kingdom amid renewed scrutiny and scandal, the former Duchess of York is reportedly preparing to return — raising fresh questions about how King Charles III may view yet another high-profile arrival back on British soil. Ferguson departed the U.K. shortly after she and her ex-husband, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, were forced out of Royal Lodge in late 2025. At the time, her past conduct was under intense examination, particularly her previous communications with disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein, making her decision to keep a low profile unsurprising. Now, less than a year later, The Sun reports that Ferguson is moving back. According to one source, the plan had been developing for some time, but news of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex returning to the U.K. gave her what she saw as a useful distraction.

“With everyone looking out for Harry and Meghan she thought she could slip back under the radar after seven months away,” the insider claimed. That strategy, however, appears to have fallen apart almost immediately, with Ferguson’s return quickly generating headlines of its own. And she may not be planning to stay silent. Just a day after reports of her move surfaced, another source told The Sun that multiple outlets had approached her about a potential interview. Rather than shutting the idea down, Ferguson was said to be weighing her options. “She is looking at her options. For her, it’s more about retaining editorial control rather than making money,” the source said. Whether such an interview materializes remains to be seen, but one thing is already clear: any hope of quietly re-entering public life has vanished.

Although King Charles III would likely prefer to avoid another round of royal controversy, Ferguson has repeatedly suggested that her bond with her former brother-in-law remains warm. Speaking to The Sunday Times in 2024, she said, “I’ve known the king all my life, and I absolutely adore him. He’s kind and makes me laugh, and I love that he still calls me Fergie.” Ferguson also emphasized that their families were connected long before she married Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, recalling childhood mischief involving the future monarch. “I’d duck him straight in the pool and put a fake dog turd outside his room. He thought it was hilarious,” she said. Charles is not the only senior royal Ferguson has described as being close to, either.

In that same interview, Ferguson also spoke warmly about Queen Camilla, despite her famously close friendship with Princess Diana dating back to their teenage years. She explained that Camilla had belonged to the inner circle of her mother, Susan Barrantes, and said, “She reminds me of mum.” Ferguson added that she wanted “to do as much for the queen as possible.” With that history in mind, it is possible King Charles is not anxiously bracing for Ferguson’s return at all — and may even welcome seeing her again.

Still, other reports have suggested the admiration may not be entirely mutual, with claims that King Charles III is not as fond of Sarah Ferguson as she appears to be of him. Whether those reports reflect the true state of their relationship is unclear. Either way, it seems unlikely His Majesty will offer any public comment on the matter.
