New revelations have surfaced about a childhood game involving abduction that Savannah Guthrie and her sister, Annie Guthrie, played with their cousin during their younger years. This information comes to light as the search for their missing mother, Nancy Guthrie, continues.
“It was called Mock Kidnapping,” Amy Brown said during a recent episode of The Bobby Bones Show. “It was something they did regularly. And her mom would play along. They would go from like Tucson to Phoenix and act like they were kidnapped.”
Bones chimed in, remarking, “I’m not judging…That just seems like an unbelievable coincidence.”
The Today show host detailed this game in her 2024 book, Mostly What God Does.

As reported by Entertainment Now, Guthrie wrote, “Every summer, about once a year, our cousin Teri would plan a kidnapping of my sister and me. The scenario unfolded like this: the cousins would stay at our Tucson home for a few days, and then on the morning of their departure, Teri would wake us up quietly before dawn.”
Continuing her account, she added, “We’d all pile into her old station wagon and head north as the sky lit up with vibrant oranges and pinks. As the sun rose over the barren desert landscape between Phoenix and Tucson, Teri would stop so Annie and I could call home from a pay phone: ‘Mom, cousin Teri kidnapped us to take us to her house!’ My mother would pretend to be shocked, express how much she’d miss us, and promise to come pick us up in a few days.”

The eerie revelation comes as the search for Nancy, who was taken from her home in Tucson, Arizona, in the early morning hours of February 1, continues. Investigators have not identified a suspect, but Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos revealed that all of the Guthrie family members have been cleared.
